Virb Edit - There was an error playing the video

That's about all I know... Just got the camera today, and when I try to play a video through Virb Edit, it just says "There was an error playing the video"
I have updated the camera firmware and Virb Edit software to the latest versions...

Is there any easy fix for this, or is it just a random bug?
Thank you!

*UPDATE* Fixed! Updated my graphics card, and now Virb Edit plays videos just fine.

The problem is the same here. I just can't figure out what can cause this problem, the error message does not give any clue where to look for solution.
The config is: Intel Core i7, 16Gb RAM, Nvidia GTX 780, Win7 x64. Windows and drivers are all up-to-date. Earlier version of Vird Edit used to work on this config but now I reinstalled the OS and since then Vird Edit does not play anything. The new 2.4 brings up this error message. Earlier versions of Virb Edit do not give any error message they just don't play the videos.
I am pretty disappointed, as without this program Virb is just a simple camera and would not worth the money. If I wanted to record only video, I could do it for less then a half of the price.

Any update? Tried to use the Virb again this weekend, and of course can't do a single thing with the captured videos. The Virb is totally useless at this point.

I'm with you, didn't appreciate that I'd need to replace my laptop just to use this camera, I have one laptop, which I use for both business and personal, don't wish to have multiple machines and don't want the hassle of transferring several business programs at this point, just in the hope that this camera will work.

Seems the only program which won't play the videos on this 2 yr old laptop is virb edit! - yes drivers are up to date.

I've been a garmin supporter for several years, bought several of the triathlon watches & associated bike equipment, plus I own a boat business, so have lots of marine stuff, but feel the VIRB is a lemon because of the software (haven't been able to challenge the hardware), only purchased it because it promised to pull speed, cadence & power data from my cycle training, but all I have is an expensive paperweight.

I feel that the VIRB edit software team needs to focus on making the program work for all buyers, rather than adding more features, otherwise Garmin needs to initiate a buy-back program.

Any update? A month later, the Virb is still totally useless because of this bug. Thanks, ...Sam

Yes, the new 2.5.0 release is still totally unusable due to this bug. Is there any estimate? I've been totally unable to use my VIRB for ... well, months. I'm actively telling people at this point that I regret buying a Virb because of this problem. Can I return it to Garmin for a refund?

FYI I just posted this to Facebook, Google+, Twitter, several geocaching forum sites and several blogs. Quite disappointing. I also contacted Garmin support asking how I can get a refund for the Virb.

I've owned a number of Garmin devices over the years, and universally they are flaky and unreliable for the first few months but then once the firmware bugs are worked out they become reliable workhorses. I've never, ever, owned a Garmin device that totally didn't work - at all - for months with no hope of resolution on the horizon...until the Virb and Virb Edit. Very disappointing....

A few months ago I bought a Garmin VIRB Elite "action camera", their alternative to a GoPro. The camera itself is nice, but the editing software that comes with it is totally, completely unusable.

Any attempt to play videos captured with the VIRB gives the error message, "An error occurred playing this video".

Other applications can play the videos just fine. But the selling point for the VIRB is that it can integrate GPS data, altitude data, speed and other information into dashboards on the video. That functionality is only possible via the software that came with the camera, which is totally broken.

On their support forums they acknowledge that it's broken, that it's been broken since at least April, and that they have no estimate for when they will have a fix.

I've contacted Garmin to ask them to let me return the VIRB for a full refund. I'll let you know what their response is.

    DO NOT BUY.

  • Sounds like you're making a big deal out of an issue with YOUR computer configuration. That's your prerogative, but I love my three Elites and tell anyone who asks.

Have you thought of using Dashware?
