Garmin Edge 810 Data with Garmin Virb

Anyone have problems importing the .FIT files with Garmin Virb videos?
I have problems synchronise the data with the video.
The final adjust on my video shows that my cycling has stop and km/h is approaching zero but then the km/h started to move first before my cycling start.
How does this happen?
Even if I didn't sync well, it should be cycling start first then km/h start a little later.
Anyone has solved this problem?
  • This is where I am at....
I have the Virb basic and an Edge 800 tracking speed, cadance, HR, and a Quark SRAM power meter.

When I tried to sync a ride with the file from my 800 I found the spot on with power and cadence going to zero when I hear the freewheel and ramping up as I hear the freewheel stop. But as soon as I export the file, it is off by 10 seconds.

Furthermore, it appears there is shrinking of the video files. If camera drops a frame here and there, it will be shorter resulting in the data overlay not aligning throughout the ride. The only workaround I have found for this is that you have to split your video files into several and re-adjust the data overlay file for each one.

I'm going to delete all my data tonight and start over on the creation process to see if the new release will more accurately keep the adjustment I make to align the video to the FIT data.

Definitely try using the new 2.4 version. We might have fixed some of the export discrepancies.
  • The new version has some great new templates for gauges and I love the gauges and readings you can add in.

Tonight I tried to start from scratch with the Virb and Edge 800 files. I aligned the middle of the video with the GPS data. I also split the video from two files into four files so I could speed up everything in the middle by 8x and only play the beginning and end in real time.

The tracking is still off at the beginning and end of the 29 minute video but perfect in the middle (when previewing the video)
When exporting the video to MP4, the GPS does not get rendered to video at 8x even though the video is being rendered at 8x. GPS plays in real time.

I started over again and rendered the 29 minute video in 1x and it seems to have corrected the issues with alignment. I did an edit of the rendered video with another software package to get the time compression added.

I don't want to deal with the frustration of trying to align the GPS data and have it not render out anymore so I'm going to return the Virb basic and I've ordered the Virb Elite. I also ordered a Sandisk Extreme card to ensure there is no issue with any write speeds with it's 40MB/sec write speed capability.

The Sandisk Ultra 64 card I have now will write at an average speed of 9-10MB/sec. HD video requires 7.42MB/sec so it should not have had an issue though.

Thank you for reporting and sorry about the trouble.

I can repro the exporting 8x speed clips issue easily. We'll get that fixed in 2.5 for sure. That was a silly oversight.

I am not sure why the tracking is off at the beginning and the end. It definitely doesn't seem right at the beginning at the video you posted. To dig into this I'd love to take a look at the real GPS data you used and the original videos.

Let me know if you'd be willing to help out and we'll figure something out how to share the files.

So let me get this straight as I have been dicking around with the wrong methods by using gpx files from Garmin connect, or using the data imported from the Virb with the video.

Is it best just to import the .fit file directly from my 810 and then adjust it in Virb Edit? I have noticed that cadence is more accurate (before it has too many zero's) and so is gradient (would jump from -5% to 5% for no reason). Is the best data from the 810 and is this the best method to get it?

Also, is the distance designed to be distance from start of clip or distance since beginning of the ride?

I was also playing with the G-force settings and apart from it being all over the place when riding, it looks like I cant get at the data if I use the .fit file from the 810.
    ..

PS. I have added a slide comparing two different outputs - notice the Virb data seems way out. I am more inclined to believe the 810.

Well, if you use data from the VIRB Elite directly it should actually be better because then it's aligned perfectly. We will look into differences between VIRB and 810 data.

If you are using the same track for each clip, then the distance starts at the beginning of the first clip. You can also change that in the Adjust->Distance tab, so that it starts earlier if your track starts earlier.

Thank you for sharing the videos!

The elevation is definitely different, the camera does take some time to calibrate properly. That's a known issue, the device guys are looking into that. I've had some people report success by leaving the VIRB turned on in GPS satellite visibility for a while before you use it to allow it time to calibrate.

The speed also makes sense, because the Edge writes the speed into the FIT file while VIRB Edit calculates the speed from the GPS data. The FIT data is definitely more precise. In a future version of VIRB Edit we will make sure to use the values from the FIT file whenever we can. That should help improve matters.

The bad grade is a side-effect of the erroneous elevation data, I believe.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I least I know what's wrong even though I cannot provide a solution at this point.

So maybe using the FIT data from the Edge is the better choice for now if you can live without acceleration data and can align it properly.
  • Even though I have the Virb Elite model, I prefer to get the GPS and ANT data from my Edge 800. The Virb very often looses connection to the ANT sensors for some strange reason, but the Edge usually keeps up fine. Further I have a thermometer in the Edge as well.
Is it possible to add a feature that lets me replace the GPS log for all clips in a Video? Usually my clips are 10-30 seconds and it is a very time consuming job to replace when I have a 14 minute video :)

We could try to be smart when you add a GPS log and detect which other clips it might apply to as well. (We'd ask the user first, so it would be a choice.)

I'll add that as a possible new feature. It won't be super high on the priority list, so I am not sure when we will get around to it.
  • Great. I must say you have done a great job so far. I tried iMovie today to add some pictures to my Virb Edit video and that cant even utilize all cores on export like VE can.
  • Thanks. So is the speed, cadence, other ANT+ data also automatically synced with the Elite?

I have my speed, cadence, HR, and Power meters all connected to both my Edge 800 & Virb Elite. It works very well to use the Virb files with the GPS data included. I have noticed some lag on the Virb with the external sensors though. I will hear my free wheeling begin and then a couple seconds later will see the Cadence and Power go to zero.

The one issue that remains is that I would like to use the Temperature and Altitude from my Edge 800 (the Virb had my altitude -312 ft rather than 32 ft) but cannot replace (or add) the GPX file from my Edge 800.
