You can download it at www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591.

This release should fix the export issues on Windows 8.1.

It should also fix some start-up crashes that were caused by incorrect track calculations.

One thing that is not yet fixed is the start-up issue on computers with on-board Intel graphics chipsets (Intel GMA 3x00). We can reproduce that issue but won't be able to get a fix for this out till January.

Please report back if you still cannot export or if you get any kinds of crashes.
  • Falagar,

Just done a test prompted by your question above.

I did a 5 minute single clip and 5 minute Multi Clip video both of which exported fine.
I then did a 10 minute single clip which exported fine.
But got the error message with a 10 minute Multi Clip file.
So after it failed I tried another 10 minute single clip to see if that would succeed, and on first attempt Virb Edit crashed and closed itself completely.
I restarted Virb Edit and tried the 10 minute single clip again, which exported fine.
Following the 10 min single clip success, I immediately tried the 10 min multi Clip file, which worked this time.

If I tried to do the same thing again, its likely to produce a different outcome, but thats the most success I've had with Virb Edit so far.

Not sure if that tells you anything. I had also just rebooted my PC prior to trying to do it. I've done a complete uninstall/reinstall as well earlier today, but still having the same issue.

I've mentioned in another thread, that I've also been hit with the FW V3 "freeze" issue on the camera. Its going to make a nice "paperweight" over the Xmas period I'm afraid ;-)

    Thanks,

    Dex.

Finally - First successful export in Windows 8.1.....
    Thanks!

Please do not forget overlay with time including seconds on next version. I want to be able to sync videos from multiple cameras.

    Hi Falagar,
Personally, I do not fully agree with your opinion about "reliability first, speed second". Mostly because I believe sometimes if one had designed something one way from the beginning, it could be a painstaking process or even impossible to change later. That applies especially strongly for non-functional requirements in software development processes. One of which is efficiency.
From what you described, Virb Edit possibly tries to do too much itself, not using the right libraries to do it for it. But I am guessing here a little bit.
Video processing is not the most cost consuming activity all right. I am using CyberLink PowerDirector to finish the videos exported from VirbEdit and it is pretty fast.
Choking users PCs during export is not a good idea - especially that it is a long process at the moment - maybe user would prefer to do it in a background and be able to use the PC at the same time? There is a nice option on WinRar that enables one to choose if he or she wishes to extract in foreground or background and it also sets the process priorities in the OS based on this choice. Nice small option that you could inspired with too.

Yes, legal stuff is even slower than exporting :D But you work for Garmin, cannot you use the maps you have in your other products to generate a minimap? Or there could be an option for the user to paste an image 'onto' the track before exporting. Than I could use e.g. Google image on my own responsibility.

    Cheers,
    Piotr

    Piotr,

thanks for your input. Well, I just think that slowly exporting beats not being able to export at all. That's all I really meant by reliability first, speed second.

We are definitely not satisfied with the speed of exporting, and will keep making improvements. We might be switching tools as well, time will tell. We'll see about not using all cores as well.

Regarding the map stuff, it's just not as easy I am afraid. But we'll keep trying, I promise. I'd like to have this feature myself.

    You're welcome.

I'll see what I can do about gauges with seconds.

Found an issue: trimming the first part of the video also trims the track even before opening it.
    http://youtu.be/2QkQG4eVKKE
I've removed the VIRB Edit database (windows explorer) to start with a clean program.
I start VIRB Edit and load the clip.
I make a movie of my clip.
My clip starts too early so I trim the left bit.
Than I want to attach a track to my clip.
At first you can see the track starts before the railway.
After importing, it starts after the railway.
When I want to adjust the track it already starts before the railway, but the black part (probably the video part) starts after the railway.
The track on the exported track also starts after the railway just like when the movie is played within VIRB Edit.
For now the solution is trimming the video before importing in VIRB Edit.
  • I installed Virbedit today as I got a new Virb for a Christmas gift. I am using Windows 7. When I downloaded Virbedit it updated me to the current Microsoft .NET of 4.5.1. I restarted the computer (repeatedly) and when I click on Virbedit to start, I end up getting a blue screen box of error reported and says it is contacting Garmin. The blue box contains a series of lines of different computer information and at the bottom says attached is a mini dump (I assume of the computer error information). It then asks me for my email address and a brief description of the problem. I only have one computer in the house with Windows 7 as the other is XP. Can you please let me know what I can do to fix this problem? I have uninstalled Virbedit 3 times and re-installed and it keeps doing the same thing when I try to launch Virbedit.

    Thanks

For now, don't connect your VIRB, put the SD card in your PC and use it with VIRB Edit in that way.
Maybe you can make a printscreen or a digital photo of the errorscreen and post it here so the developers can see it and deal with the error. VIRB Edit is still much in the process of creation, features are added and bugs are fixed, but still there are bugs. There are problems with some graphics cards, with the audio from the clips not being exported and more.

Managed to record 2h+ video, do some trimming and export in 1080p with Virb Edit 2.25.
Virb Elite FW 3.0. I updated it to 3.1 now but couldn't get out to play due to the weather.

What the hell does YouTube do with the video ? I read somewhere they limit the bitrate for 1080p video. Is there any way we can adjust Virb Edit to output the approximate bitrate YouTube would use so we don't loose too much quality when uploading ?
