  • So disappointing to discover that my brand new Virb Elite is not able to function for the specific task I purchased it for. I've had it for one day and while it takes great video, I can't use the overlays (the specific and I might add, only, reason I went for Garmin over GoPro) or export any videos because the software is broken and my brand new computer seems to only just meet the new requirements of 5.1.0. On top of that, I can't even find a manual for Virb Edit. How can the hardware be good and yet the software be so poor?

Looks like it's money back time. And you think I'd have learnt. I have had to send back every Garmin product I've ever bought, and every one has had software issues throughout my ownership. A GoPro, a Suunto watch and RaceRender Software... I'm sorry Garmin, but why is that the solution?

You can download the previous version of Virb edit here:

Works well with my Virb Elite
  • Thanks you PeteHolloway. I shall try the roll-back and see how I get on. I want to love the Virb Elite - but its just so frustrating that I can't get it to work out of the box!

Here's hoping 5.1.1 is rolling out asap.

I´m with you, that it is sometimes very disappointing with garmin software (and even more disappointing with some firmwares [And don´t even let me talk about development for gamin devices ]).
But the Virb Edit guys always had an open ear and try to solve any issue or find a workaround!
It is a bit to exaggerated to send a device back, if a single software version doesn´t work as expected and the developer promise to correct it... Just my two cents.

Maybe Garmin should consider a beta program, like they did in the past. It took me 10 minutes to find out the gauges don´t change their values and import optimization crashed on some Intel graphic cards.
  • @aramezan
Thanks for the information. I started a new thread to collect Export issue related information "https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?378452-VIRB-Edit-5-1-Export-Issues would you please review and provide additional information listed there?

Equinox, Sorry it has taken so long to reply. I have upgraded my AMD Radeon 5870 video card to an Nvidia 1070 and that upgrade fixed my static line issue in 5.1. So far the only issue remaining for me in 5.1 is the gmetrix gauges not displaying any data that has been discussed on these forums and I've seen a fix has been found. Hopefully that gets released soon as I have to roll back to 4.3.2 and get really slow export times. I have detailed my upgrade and results in the following topic, https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?378130-Does-Video-Card-Matter-For-Exporting

    Thanks for the assistance!
  • Virb Edit ver 5.1 crashes/stops when playing/editing videoclips.

    Hi

Just bought a Virb Ultra 30 camera and installed Virb edit om my Lenovo ideacenter 30020ISH. Downloading and installing the program works fine, also importing videoclips from the camera is OK, but when I try to play or edit the imported clips the program just stops working with a pop-up message that says "A problem led to the program stopped working properly. The program will be closed and you will be notified if a solution is available." I've just updated the graphic card driver to ver 21.19.415.513, but that did not help.

My desktop computer is almost new with the following spec:

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64 bit
    Processor: Intel i7-G4400 3.30 Ghz
    RAM: 8GB
    Graphics: AMD Radeon R5 340
    Graphics Memory: 1GB
    Display: 1920 x 1080
    Internal Storage: 256 Gb DRAM
    Eksternal harddisks: 4 Tb

    What is wrong?
  • It does make you wonder if Garmin test their software at all before pushing an update. It is clear from this thread that it is not an edge case that is just happening to me.
I have separately raised a support request and uploaded the entire content of my SD card to Google Drive - hopefully that can help fix this issue.

I tried to roll back to a previous version of virb edit but when I run that I have a dialogue box that keeps appearing and disappearing. I can't kill the application. I think that it is in a app start loop so it launches, tries to display the dialogue then dies.
I did manage to read the dialogue once - it says there is a new version of virb edit, please download it...

If my new £2000 gaming focused PC with a GTX 1080 Ti graphics card can't run the software then I think Garmin need to re-evaluate minimum specs.

How do I run an old version of Virb Edit?
When are we getting a fix Garmin?

I managed to roll back by deleting the virb edit folders under C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Garmin

I get the feeling that the VIRB Edit developers are writing their code with boxes that have the latest, greatest GAMER graphics cards and are featuring that anyone that buys a Garmin video product and intends to use VIRB Edit have equivalent machines. That is a FALSE assumption. Most of the computers that are using VIRB Edit are plain vanilla from the factory machines with Standard Graphics cards. The Garmin developers are doing their company a disservice by designing VIRB Edit to only work on 'hot rod' graphics cards.
