HomePort Keeps Looking at my "A" drive.

I have installed HomePort v2.0.3 and whenever I start up the program, it constantly and non-stop keeps trying to look for something on my floppy "a" drive.

It will not stop.....

What do you think is causing this behavior and how can I make it stop ?

Thanks
  • Unfortunately Garmin support wasn't able to guide me in this direction so I had to figure it out myself.

I don't post advice or suggestions to win a popularity contest, just to try and help. I suppose it's because I was in the industry, it seems simple to me to pop the coover off my PC to see if unplugging the "A" drive would solve the problem.

Computers no longer come with floppy drives, USB drives and SD cards have made them obsolete. This has been the case for several years. We cannot expect companies to support obsolete equipment forever. Think DOS or Windows 95 or 98.

NeoLite has indicated that this issue will be addressed in a future release. I suspect this is an issue that affects very few users. If the OP cannot wait, I would still suggest disconnecting the "A" drive, at least for a test. His other option, of course, is to not use the software. Or, buy a current model computer.

Rather than pull the plug on your floppy drive, you can disable it temporarily by using START>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER> +FLOPPY DISK DRIVE (then right click on Floppy Disk Drive and select "Disable"). It will say "Disabling this Device will cause it to stop functioning", select "Yes"). If you want to enable it again, just repeat the steps but when you right click select "enable". Much simpler than opening the box and pulling out plugs. The "clack" "clack" noise should stop immediately on Homeport.

    Thanks for the tip.

I will try this until Garmin makes the fix.
  • I'm guessing that Homeport polls all drives on startup, for some reason. The fix for this would be really simple. Just identify the type of drive and don't poll it if it's a floppy. A simple conditional expression would easily cure it.

Anyway, while we're waiting for Garmin to fix this, the easy solution is to put a disk in the floppy drive. Homeport accesses the drive for a minute, decides there's nothing of interest there and leaves it alone. Sorted.
