Waypoint Symbols in Routes

I imported several routes from MapSource. This went well.

I then created a new route to extend one of the existing routes. The symbols for the waypoints in the old routes are dots which is fine. The symbols for the new route which I combined with an existing route are anchors.

How to I change the symbols to dots?

Is there a way to set default route symbols?

  • rwidman,
Not that this has anything to do with, or solve the icon problem, but may help your "many waypoint routes created for wifey" problem. :D

Instead of using a route for those close qtrs, lots of waypoint area's (aka lots of turns..). Save a track going through there. Now next time, follow the track and engange your GHP10 AP to navigate the track. The wifey will only need to keep lookout for other boats... as the AP takes you thru. The nice part is, you won't have any WP's anywhere in your way.

HP makes this very easy now, because we can save and load/merge multiple files from the SD card. So you won't need to keep that track stored on the plotter (taking up valuable track point memory) all the time. Jut keep it in a separate file (folder in hp) called "WIFE" and merge it in when needed. Once she gets you thru that area, delete the track from the plotter again.

    ;)

    But I don't have an autopilot. :(

I had problems with memory limits on my 182c but I haven't hit any on the 5208. Yet. ;)

I'm having the same problem Ron is, and it doesn't matter how many waypoints are in a route. What happens is that some waypoints will not appear in the object view panel on the lower left, and they don't present an "edit" option when you select them in a route.

Like Ron said, you can delete them, move them, or create them, but you can't change the icon in the edit preperties box.

I got around this with a very PITA workaround. What I have to do is use the "insert" tool to add a new waypoint to a route, just after one of the waypoints that has become "lost". That new waypoint will usually be changeable, so I then just delete the old one and move the new one to where I want it.

Like I said, it's a PITA, and I wouldn't want to have to do it to more than a few waypoints.
  • I think we have to consider that there are two distinct types of "waypoints", those we create for our own use (marina, boat ramp, restaurant, favorite fishing hole, etc.) and those created by HomePort (or MapSource) as places where a route changes.

We can create a route by creating a series of waypoints first and having HomePort create the route from these waypoints. This will give us waypoints that can be changed in appearance and renamed, but we will end up with hundreds of waypoints. Also, this is pretty cumbersome as a route on a river with a lot of turns may have a hundred or more waypoints.

When creating a route on the chart with the mouse, the programs create waypoints but they are different in that they cannot be renamed or given a different appearance. That's fine as they are only places where a turn is to be made. It would suit me fine (and I expect most other users) if these were just small dots, just large enough to be clicked on and moved if necessary.

A route created in MapSource (which will have black flags as waypoints) and then imported into HomePort will then have these small dots as waypoints. I'm not certain because I am not on the boat, but I believe a route created in MapSource, uploaded to a plotter, and then downloaded back into MapSource will have the flags changed to dots. My guess is this happens when the icon is not supported in the device or other software.

I have been using MapSource for years and HomePort since it became available. Sitting at home and planning routes is a great way to make sure you get where you're going and stay out of trouble spots. It's also fun when you can't be on the water. I thank Garmin for both products.

I hope the next release or update will incorporate the ideas and suggestions posted here. Microsoft does not have such a forum. ;)

    Anchors "away"

I agree with some of the other comments. It is a PITA that creating routes in HP assigns them anchor icons with no way to change it. It take up too much valuable screen space. Changing the default to small dots in an program update would be appreciated. Away with the anchors!
