epix 2 titanium bezel scratches very easily

I was seriously surprised how easy the watch gets scratched. I only had it for a week and already have a large one on my bezel without any substantial damage done to it.

Hoping if garming ever reviews this forum then they  would consider making this watch a little bit more durable in the future because now it is a complete joke.

  • doesn't mean you didn't as you must have. You were probably just too distracted to notice - and it has to have been something that is harder than titanium metal.....

Scratches aren't just going to appear by themselves.

I remember an older mechanical watch and being amazed at how the dome kept on getting scratched. Took me 5 months to work out it was a casual action I was doing that was causing the scratches - when washing and drying my watch after being in the sea/water I would always shake it around to get water out of the lug areas and the strap areas. Unfortunately the strap buckle was of course free and loose- otherwise how to get the water out of it, and that was hitting the glass screen and scratching it. It was only when I discovered this and starting to shake dry by covering the watch screen with my hand, that I realised how hard the buckle was actually hitting it....But it took a while to realize that quite a simple action which I didn't even notice was causing damage.

  • On titanium, smaller scratches tend to be less visible after some time.
As it was already pointed out...titanium is not one of the hardest materials but it's definitely lighter than steel and that's one of the reasons why someone would go with titanium instead of stainless steel.
Sapphire is one of the hardest materials and scratching the screen should be definitely a lot harder.

The scratch resistance between stainless steel and titanium should be similar according to the Mohs scale(the same used by those phone scratchers on youtube).
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness

My actual phone survived for more than a 1 year without noticeable scratches and one day i put it in the pocket together with some other stuff(some keys and other stuff) and i found it full of small scratches. I don't think the problem was the keys but i don't remember anymore what else i had in the pocket.
Some of them were pretty visible at the beginning but, now, i really need to get a good angle with the light to even see the biggest ones.

  • The bezel will always scratch no matter which version. The sapphire screen will not.  Sapphire is a 9 on hardness and it is very difficult to scratch. Totally worth the upgrade from the gorilla glass. But you will have to live with scratches on the bezel.

  • I have a Tissot T-touch Expert carbon/titanium  (great abc watch) which case and band are made entirely from titanium.. it has loads of scratches as I have worn it daily anytime as my outdoor watch before I bought my first Fenix. Titanium looks great, is lighter than steel, but also more vulnerable to scratches. The sapphire glass is still scratch free. Similar price range as an epix 2, same potential results. Non coated titanium can be fixed by specialists, dlc cannot, but should be tougher for smaller scratches. An Epix 2 is a great tool. Use it to the max and it will deliver it’s value

  • "Non coated titanium can be fixed by specialists"

Non coated titanium can be restored to "brushed" look easily with a Scotch-Brite scrub sponge.

  • I want to add here - steel bezel also scratches without any effort. Less than a month in use - and there are already a couple of very visible scratches.

I also expected steel to be more scratch proof then titanium but it seems it's not the case. Kind of disappointing.

  • Nice to know this solution exists @Gustco, thanks for sharing!

Would you mind posting a picture of how it looks in real life on the watch?

    Thanks!

  • Sure, btw  it fits the Marq Gen 2 I just got last week.

  • Awesome! It doesn't look half as bad as I thought it would :-)

Ordering a couple for my epix as we speak, I'll feel much more comfortable during outdoor activities, especially when surrounded by rocks and boulders!

Thanks so much for providing these!

  • Your welcome, I bought 4 and now with my new Marq Gen 2 Adventurer feel even safer to avoid scratching while training. or rough usage.
