Reserve - Zoncolan 2023

While filming in Austria last September, we figured to refilm an old legend as we were relatively close. Not the best weather conditions, but this is a climb to be experienced rather than one to enjoy. The bleak grey overhanging clouds that rolled in add an element of impending doom haha. It's a good climb also to highlight the fact we now film towards the horizon rather than up the climb. It's a change we made when switching to the newer camera system. This lets you clearly see the steepness of the grade that you will also experience.

  • I can't wait to test this! I'm a big fan of these types of climbs. A proper knee-hurter :)
It's great to read that improvements have been made to increase the feeling of the actual steepness by filming "towards the horizon". Are the latest published movies filmed in this way too?

Some of them are, for the last year we had two completely different camera/Gimbal kits here that can both be mounted on Bertha, the slightly older one cant do the horizon trick but has what is to my eyes a better image here on a 5K mac display before it makes its way through all the various stages of compression. Thats what we filmed the pro teams & Mallorca with, anything older released in the last years was from this kit, so rides in Norway etc. To me the older camera gets a much better image if Im having a good day haha.  The new camera is a lot more simple, kind of plug & play, but it can do some cool stuff like look at the horizon, its much better at stabilising also so I can use a more narrow lens, that gets you a more realistic feel & a slower motion that helps with the compression. So by the time it gets to stream it should be a better image overall. I like the newer camera most because I can pull it out of its box, which is much smaller then we normally have, click it onto the mount on Bertha & film. The older one required a dozen cables, little batteries everywhere, things plugged onto the bars, all kinds of tests etc before filming....while filming I had to focus a lot more on adjusting various settings, so it was kind of dangerous, especially if attempting to descend mountains behind pro teams.

  • So films Ive made that look at the horizon so far will be anything from Austria, Switzerland this year, The amazing Dolomites trip (if we publish these to Beta it will be next Spring). The main bulk of that Raid Pyrenees we have filmed last September, so from the Aubisque all the way to the Mediterranean. I think also recent Japan, OZ, NZ films, not sure if they did for the US footage.

  • This is publishing, but this is not a priority for testing, it was just on a drive I wanted to format & a relatively fast edit..its just for anyone thats feeling a bit masochistic (the self flagellation aspect of cycling up incredibly nasty climbs....in a garage)

     ;-)

  • [X] When/where can I find it? I'd like to make proper use of my pain cave... ;)

  • per use of my pain cave... ;)

I published it a few days ago, but then also a few other rides so you may need to scroll a bit. Or it failed to publish & I will need to solve it when I’m back from the Provence, normally next week.

  • had a bug, put should be publishing at some point today into Beta

  • Thanks Phil, this is going to be fun!
