Heart rate measurements too high with exercise

I just got a vivosport 1 week ago. RHR measurements seem accurate as does HR during light activity. However, I have done 2 runs and one bike ride that have shown average heart rates that cannot possibly be correct. I have searched the forum and the internet and it seems that the most common problem is for the HRM to UNDERestimate true HR, not overestimate as I believe it is doing.

Some examples:

On a 29km bike ride on mostly flat terrain, my average HR was recorded as 158 bpm. It calculated a majority of the ride being in zone 4. I can tell you, I was definitely not in zone 4.

On a 3km run, my average HR was recorded as 175 bpm. On another 4km run, it was recorded as 176 bpm. Essentially it's telling me that I'm in zone 5 for 15-20 minutes straight which makes no sense, and I was not near exhaustion.

I have adjusted the band. I have changed the position of the watch on my wrist. I have cleaned it. At the end of my run today, when I saw the average HR of 175, I palpated my carotid pulse for a full minute as I cooled down to compare to the watch. I palpated a HR of 127, while the watch said 142.

Does anyone else have experience with HR measurements being too high during activity???

  • I've found.like you that the Vivosport is unsatisfactory for HRM during exercise. Since most of my exercise is cycling, I now use an ANT+ HRM chest strap, which works fantastically well. For my situation, the Vivosport is great for 24/7 monitoring, but not much use as an exercise HRM.

On bike rides, I used to regularly lose the first 10 minutes of data and get periodic dropouts. Soon got bored of that. Bad data is worse than no data. But other than that the VivoSport is a great little device.
