GPS Smart Recording - why no option for 1-second recording interval?

I'm thinking about getting the Vivosport, but I'm hesitant because of the "smart recording" feature on the GPS. It seems that the gps only records every 3-7 seconds when running, instead of the usual 1-second that you would get using, say, Strava on the phone.

It also seems that there is no option to change it - "smart" is the only option.

Any idea why Garmin is doing this? Is it just a price-point thing or is there actually a limitation in the hardware?
  • Data is always recorded at 1Hz intervals. What the devices does is choose whether or not to save the data depending on what changes in variables such as heart rate, speed, change of direction etc. If you are going in a straight line at a constant pace and constant heart rate, why save data? It's likely due to storage space on the device. Smart recording of data takes less space than recording every data point at 1Hz intervals.
  • I would also like the option 1 second updates. Most of my running routes have turns and corners, and my vivosport cuts the corners enough that it has a noticeable effect on total recorded distance. I think the problem with smart recording is that it takes too long to realize you?ve changed directions.

I have a route that I?ve tracked more than 200 times with an iPhone, and the Vivosport tracked the shortest distance ever by .15 miles. Looking at the track you can see where sharp corners were cut and slight bends were missed. Smart recrding is a nice idea, but I?d rather have 1 second data, even if it means a little hit on battery life.

Thanks for the response philipshambrook. Was wondering exactly how it worked.

However, as Polydactyl says, and as other reviews have reported (see DC Rainmaker's review), this leads to cut corners and inaccurate gps tracks. Particularly when sharing activities with other apps, like Strava, which then causes problems with discrepancies between distances and so on.

I'm sure the unit would run out of battery before it ran out of storage space, so I don't buy that as the reason. If you run for 8 hours on gps, at 1 second intervals, the file might a couple of MBs. Not a stretch for a gadget made in 2017.

So I'm guessing it is actually just a price-point thing?
