Configuring steps and distances (walking)

So i gifted my mum a Vivoactive 4 for christmas. She is happy with the device (having not had anything like this in the past; it's her first fitness wearable) and i am impressed at how compact it is. The screen response isn't the best however.,,,anyway....

One thing i am finding is that it seems quite generous with the step counts so we have manually configured the walking stride length for her, although i'm not sure this actually affects the number of daily steps out with an activity.

We've had a few walks together and i'm finding the measured distance quite different compared to the distance recorded on my F5. For exactly the same route my F5 is measuring around 4.57km and her VA4 is measuring around 4.27km, regularly.

I appreciate there will be discrepancies as the VA4 doesn't have GPS, however does anyone have any advice as to how we can reconfigure the accuracy of the steps and indeed the logged distance when walking?
  • The device uses arm swinging motion to record steps. There is not a way to calibrate how the device records steps. Like you have mentioned, the calibration of the stride length will help with the distance that is recorded, but will not affect the number of steps the device records. She may have better luck by switching the wrist she wears the device on. This may help reduce the number of false steps that are recorded.

I have provided a link to our Support Center website that gives more details about how a step is recorded: My Fitness Device is not Accurately Counting Steps.
