Gpx tracking with phone

I would love to be able to use my phone's GPS to record GPX for my runs in Garmin connect.

As I see it, this is currently not implemented?
  • No, it cannot be done, as the Vivomove HR has no built-in GPS. Or rather, that is the "official" explanation. In reality trackers from another well known brand (which I owned for years), have what they call "connected GPS". It means that the app on the phone reads the data from the phone GPS and correlate it with the data coming from the watch/tracker. Then a map is shown on the app, tracking in real time your walk/run. I would think that if others can do it, Garmin could too. Unless there are technical reasons, it could just be a marketing tactic to differentiate watches with built-in GPS and drive users to by those models if they want GPS tracking. As an alternative I use an app called Sportractive, which works quite well.

Okay. Well, your theory makes sense that they don't provide it to differentiate products. Is there any official statement from Garmin with respect to this? Or any other roadmap when it comes to software development of their products? Should I rather assume that they software and feature set will stay as is, or are they known for extending and improving their software?

Sportractive looks promising. So it can read the heart rate from the watch? Weird that I haven't found it previously! Will definitely try it out.
  • I have no idea if and when Garmin may add a "connected GPS" functionality. I do not even know if it is possible, they may have implemented their system differently than the "other" brand. The Garmin watches with GPS can track your route and show it in the same app we use for the Vivomove HR, so the function is there. It just relies on the GPS data provided by the watch, rather than by the phone.

I have not tried reading the heart rate with Sportractive, so I can't say if it work with the Vivomove HR.

Ok. Well, I just stumbled over their functionality for the Vivomove HR to use the phone's GPS location for the weather. So retrieving the GPS from the phone seems possible and even already implemented in the phone at least in a rudimentary way.
