It finally got bright enough here in Ohio for me to test this. Yes in bright sun you can't read the notifications but its trivial to just block the sun with your other hand the same way you would need to for a phone.
Depending on what phone you have paired with. Android devices you can turn on or off smart notifications for any application, Apple devices its all or nothing.
