What modes does HRM dual actually work with Vivoactive 3?

I recently got a HRM dual so I could put the watch on a handlebar mount when biking and still get heart rate data. I decided to try it on a swim and got no data for heart rate. It connects to the watch, it even says it has an external heart rate monitor when I put it into swim mode. However during the swim, I can't view heart rate data and after the swim, there is no data in the app for heart rate. I don't get how the watch can tell me there is an external heart rate monitor connected when I am in swim mode but then does nothing with said connection. Is there something I am missing?

  • All BT devices use 2.4GHz radio frequency—which does not work well in water. This is due to laws of physics, as water molecules attenuate the signal. When any Bluetooth device is put underwater, the range is just few inches. You can try to get a signal when the watch is a few inches from the HRM Dual to see that it is working, but obviously the signal fails when you swim with the watch on your wrist. You can connect the watch to the strap itself to get a session reading probably..

  • Thank you man for this contribution. Although I'm not a regular swimmer, reading your explanation about how bluetooth behaves under water is interesting!
