Vivoactive 3: GPS stuck on version 0.0

For a few months now (i think since software update to version 8.1?) the GPS on my vivoactive 3 hasn't worked. When starting an activity I keep "waiting for GPS". Up until last week the watch would reboot when - i think- it found GPS. After rebooting I had to start the activity again and the same problem would repeat again. Now the watch doesn't reboot anymore, but is just stuck on the "waiting for GPS" screen.

Today I found out that the GPS version of my watch is stuck on version 0.0, regardless of updating my watch in Garmin Express. I've been looking for files to update the GPS to version 2.50 again, but haven't found them so far.

Have tried the fix in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/vivoactive-3-3-music/280278/sensor-hub-6-64-fix-information Unfortunately it didn't update my GPS software version.

This whole problem is making me lose my trust in Garmin, so I'm really really hoping for a fix.

  • Update: the GPS update to version 2.50 randomly appeared in Garmin Express, so I tried to install it. According to Garmin Express this all went smoothly. However, after unplugging and restarting my watch, the GPS software was still stuck on version 0.0.

  • Please connect your vivoactive 3 watch to a Windows computer and follow instructions below:

    1. Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E)
    2. Double click on the vivoactive 3 icon (shown as a removable drive)
    3. Open 'Primary' drive (if applicable)
    4. Open GARMIN folder
    5. Look for a file with the .gcd extension. (delete it if present)
    6. Open the RemoteSW folder
    7. If any file is shown there with the .gcd extension, delete it
    8. Close File Explorer
    9. Sync your watch with Garmin Express
    10. After syncing, remove your watch from the charging cable
    11. If prompted, select "Install Now" on the watch

If this is not successful, please reach out to your local Garmin Product Support team.  To do this, type "support.garmin.com" in your address bar and use the Garmin Support Center to research your issue.  Once you get far enough in the search, you will see (at the bottom of the page) some contact options, which may include Call, Chat, and Email.
