Vivo active 3 with strap and new battery wildly inaccurate (too high)

Recently, my Vivoactive 3 has started displaying heart rates that are WAY higher than they should be.  Replaced the battery and upgraded the firmware and it was still too high.  I have never been able to walk at a "tempo" pace. Easy rides were at max HR.  Tested my watch against Stravas built in HR recording feature and the Strava data was completely normal.  Have completely reset the watch and got one day of normal HR data.  Now to is back to the inappropriately high HR data.  No, I do not have arrhythmia and have a cardiologist that would have diagnosed that with all the testing I have had done.  Frankly, I think it is sort of irresponsible that Garmin doesn't maintain a baseline algorithm for their data.  How many other people out there are freaking out about their insane HR data?  Today I was able to fix the problem by stopping my workout, shutting the watch off and taking off my strap.  I shouldn't have to do that Garmin!  Please advise.

  • An external HRM?  If a band do you wet it or use a gel? The bands I have all show pictures of getting it wet before hand.

  • I always get the strap wet.  With saliva usually.

One caveat, I am using a polar strap with a Garmin transmiter , per the advice of DC rainmaker.  According to what I have read, the polar strap is better made and is more accurate.  I have never had any problems up until now.
