Heart rate based training. Is it accurate?

Today  I decided to try the heart rate based training plans for intermediate half marathon. I chose the easy run Zone 2 for 30 minutes. I found that it's very hard to stay in Zone 2 and I have 2 walk to keep it low. I have never adjusted the heart zones settings. I run 4 times a week for a long time so I expect that my heart can cope better. My resting heart rate is around 50.

Is that reasonable or am I doing something wrong?

  • Hi Duraid,

I do not know your age, so I can only say about the accuracy of the measured pulse.
As with all optical sensors, the accuracy is not comparable to the chest strap - I highly recommend using it. In my opinion, the accuracy of the first 5 minutes of running may vary from the real one - it depends on the type of skin, capillaries, etc.
Then VA3 catches the pulse and keeps it quite accurately.
Second. Heart rate zones - this needs to be measured separately, especially if you want to rely on them - this is important. Moreover, in the process of training, let's say, every 3 months you need to take new measurements - the zones will stretch, the maximum heart rate will increase. I do not know your VOmax2, if it is already above 45, then maybe once every six months.
    Good luck!

  • Thanks for your reply. I though garmin connects determines the zones automatically but you're saying i shouldn't rely on those and measure on my own.
