Significant battery drain for Vivoactive 3 after 7.70 firmware update

I am not sure when exactly my Vivoactive 3 updated to version 7.70. But it was sometime recently. And for the last few days I am noticing that the battery life of my Vivoactive 3 has gone down significantly! I am only getting about 1 day of battery life on a full charge, sometimes even less than 24 hours!

My watch is more than 2.5 years old and when I measured my battery life a month or two ago, I was easily getting more than 5 days on a full charge with heart rate measurement on. And I believe I was getting around 5 days on a full charge even a few weeks ago. But this week I am suddenly noticing less than a day of battery! I am very upset with this sudden and massive decrease in battery life. Looking at the forums here, it seems like many people are experiencing poor battery life with the latest update. I am very disappointed with Garmin for this poor quality update and I really hope they fix it so that my watch is usable again! It is such a great device and I am upset that bad software updates may be causing such massive problems! Please fix it!

  • Yeah perhaps there is a difference in hardware as you say...unsure if we can compare differences in hardware to confirm that.

Is it just the battery drain for you?  Or other symptoms?

  • I don't think they're being coy, that's giving them too much credit.  Ha  I'm guessing they only "fix forward" and won't support moving back to a old version.

  • Either way the support response is frustrating as hell when we’re paying decent money for their device.  I have a new instinct solar too...if THAT does the same thing I’ll be looking for supportive legislation!

its all good fixing forward, they just need to allow a rollback like they have done in the 7.72 beta.  It’s literally just renaming a file in the Garmin folder!

  • Yes, just battery life everything else mostly works fine. Though I did have an issue where the watch froze a couple of times and had to have a soft reset but that only happened twice since the 7.70 release. Never had it before 7.70.

  • Mine would drain the battery in 12 hours, was slow to respond to button/face press, would sometimes not show heart rate during activities and would not communicate via Bluetooth (but could via cable).  There was also an error file in the Garmin folder on the watch that showed the sensor hub was resetting every 11 seconds.

  • My (replacement) Vivoactive 3 is just over 2 years old. Battery, since 7.70 firmware lasts half a day now with virtually all functions off! I have to recharge twice a day

  • Hi Amber,

I am having this same issue. Has there been any update? I only recently came across this thread, but I don't see any recent posts regarding a solution. Thank you!

  • HI Amber,

I have a Garmin VivoActive 3 and it now requires charging 3x per day and does not last through the night without shutting down. I have tried the 40sec reboot.

Can you help - can you send me a message with contact info so we can resolve this? It does not appear that there is a solution coming out to fix the firmware update that is killing this device.

  • Hey Amber - could someone in Garmin help with the fix - even allowing us to roll back to the older version would be helpful. I contact my local rep as requested by you. But they claim that Garmin Tech side didn't received any complaint about any battery drain. Disappointed

She suggested that I should bring my watch for repair/check and pay the necessary charges because my watch serial number is US based.

Could someone for your side help .... don't make sense for me to pay for check/repair when the fireware upgrade gave the problem.

  • Same problem here, Garmin FIX IT
