Significant battery drain for Vivoactive 3 after 7.70 firmware update

I am not sure when exactly my Vivoactive 3 updated to version 7.70. But it was sometime recently. And for the last few days I am noticing that the battery life of my Vivoactive 3 has gone down significantly! I am only getting about 1 day of battery life on a full charge, sometimes even less than 24 hours!

My watch is more than 2.5 years old and when I measured my battery life a month or two ago, I was easily getting more than 5 days on a full charge with heart rate measurement on. And I believe I was getting around 5 days on a full charge even a few weeks ago. But this week I am suddenly noticing less than a day of battery! I am very upset with this sudden and massive decrease in battery life. Looking at the forums here, it seems like many people are experiencing poor battery life with the latest update. I am very disappointed with Garmin for this poor quality update and I really hope they fix it so that my watch is usable again! It is such a great device and I am upset that bad software updates may be causing such massive problems! Please fix it!

  • I too am having the same problem. My watch is a vivoative 3 that is a couple of years old. Up until about 2 weeks ago I was still going about 6 days between charges. Immediately after the update to 7.70, the battery drains completely in less than a day. I am in the United States and I've also tried all of the resets that have been mentioned. I do not have any 3rd party apps or any additional watch faces installed. Please add me to the list of affected gear and you are welcome to contact me for more information.

  • Yep, it certainly looks like Garmin have released an update that is turning a perfectly good “smart” watch into a useless wrist weight. My main concern now is how long it is taking to get the next update out to fix the issue.  Since this is entirely of Garmin’s making will they refund the cost of the watch so that we can buy something that works again???

  • LOL. Just check the forum for other topics about battery draining. It started with other early updates a couple of years ago and Garmin is only offering resets and refurbished pieces for 90 USD/EUR/GBP. It looks like they do it on purpose to make us buy new watches. Refund, ahah. Sorry i did not want to be mean but read this whole topic to realize the situation.

  • Unfortunately I have read it, but it’s less what is said in the forum now and more what Garmin will do about it.  I agree, given the issue is entirely software related it appears that Garmin is purposely bricking their watches to push people into buying the next one.  But if this is how they play the game, they won’t be buying another Garmin product.  They should be going as fast as possible to release an update and fix their reputation.  Given the length of this thread, that doesn’t appear to be the case.  I’ve worked in development houses before and know what it’s like when a bad patch goes out. But the elapsed time for this issue is frustrating and a little disturbing given to date I have bought into the Garmin brand.

  • my experience is after bad batch Fenix 5+, this time i was after used VA3, found one where seller claimed that watch was used by dad of seller /old chap/. When i collected watch i checked SW and watch was 6.10. after pairing i have got update to 7.70 where i wasn't happy about but ...after few days i have used watch at work 4 days with all sensor and bt off, my battery dropped from 96 to 53 only, today is day 7 after charging and used HR sensor for 2 days and bt connection, im on 40 percent still, so claimed 7 days with hr is real on 7.70, and watch is definitely not new. Time will tell but look solit to me, im using basic watch face, showing time and date only.

  • Yeah, it can’t be happening to everyone otherwise Garmin would care more.  As it is I don’t think they care at all that their customers now have an entirely useless watch with their name on it.  My watch lasts a day and won’t pair. I’ve tried to reach out to Garmin on their Facebook chat but no response.  If only I knew they had such a crap level of service.  Amber is probably some bot they have in the forum to stretch things out.  There’s easily enough information on this thread to provide a proper update to all those waiting for a new patch.  The simple fact is when 7.7 has been release it’s causing some watches to hit an endless cycle that’s draining. The battery.  Now fix it!!!

  • Correction: Garmin has now responded to me on the Facebook chat and I have provided details.  Will await word and report back here.
