activity heart rate doesnt kick in for 10 minutes

Has anyone gotten an answer to this issue? For the first ten minutes of exercise it locks my heart rate at 100sh while I'm climbing steep hills, running, rucking etc doesnt seem to matter. Then after about 10 minutes it works really well. The common answer is wrist heart rate monitors tend to do this but that isn't true. My wifes cheap fitbit, Samsung, Apple watch none of them have this issue. I love this watch/Garmin but there has to be a fix for this. Most of my workouts are roughly 30 minutes and having a 3rd of it with bad date makes the watch almost worthless for what I do.

I've adjusted how I wear it, cleaned it, checked for scratches etc and its now been an issue on both Garmin watches I've had. Any ideas?

  • I know this won't help but I have similar frustrations with the heart rate functionality recently as the numbers vary and do not coincide with what I am doing, When I do a long steady run, some of the km are showing a HR 20 bpm higher than when I am doing an intervals session.

I, like you have tried resetting the watch, cleaning etc but it hasn't improved,

Makes me wonder if it is a sensor issue on the watch or a software update is needed.

Hopefully someone from Garmin could comment or acknowledge.

  • What happens with some other models that I'm aware of is that when it doesn't sense a heart rate it defaults to a standard value until it finally senses your pulse. I can't say that that is your issue however I would try 2 things: 1. Tighten the band one notch when in an activity to minimize other light interfering. 2. Move it up a bit so that the watch is on a more fleshy part of your arm.

  • Thanks for that- will give that a try.

I have tried removing the watch during running and it seems to take ages to register no pulse etc which makes me wonder if there is a software or sensor issue.

  • This has started happening to me after my watch updated last week its so frustrating! my HR is stuck around 90-100 for at least 10 minutes and then shoots up to what it should be (about 160ish) so annoying. it did it for my whole workout on the Strength setting the other day

any tips on hoe to stop this? I've tried taking it off, cleaning it, pausing it putting it back on again, its not on too loose or too tight either
