Intensity minutes suddenly stopped working

Recently (the last week or 2) the Intensity minutes are not being reported (or recorded?) and show as 0.

I have the setting set to use HR zones. It has always worked before but appears to have suddenly stopped.

The watch updated with a new time-zones update recently, but I am not sure whether this is when the problem started.

I have tried powering the wtach off and on again and doing a forced hard reset of it just in case it had got itself into a funny state, but it is still not recording anything

  • yeah i have started noticing this in the last 10 days or so.  i am using a vivoactive 3.  i vageuly remember a time zone update

Hello! What activity are you performing? Are you getting heartrate readings throughout the activity still? Do the intensity minutes show 0 on the watch and app?

  • I am doing normal step tracking, I also perform walking and yoga activities.

My step counts and heart rate are all working fine both in and out of activities.

The Intensity minutes are 0 on the watch, on the phone app. and on Garmin Connect online.

I currently have them set to use HR zones, with low intensity in zone 2 and high intensity in zone 4

  • Okay, do you reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes of activity where your heart rate is at or above the HR Zones that you've set for Moderate or Vigorous-intensity?

  • I presume so, I haven't change my lifestyle significantly this last week, but I suppose it's possible that I haven't.

Unfortunately the metric is accumulated and I am not able to cross reference against historic heart data.

I will try an experiment and lower the moderate threshold to zone 1 and see if it starts reporting again. In which case it must be me being a layabout.

Thanks for the help, I'll get back to you in a day or so.

  • Anytime! Please let me know if you still experience the same issue.

  • Have you recently merged a tacx and a garmin account.  My old tacx account had different heart rate zones applied which seem to keep overwriting my garmin settings.  Result is an activity which would be in zone 3 and 4 is now in zone 2 and 3 and therefore gets less intensity minutes.  Annoying as even when I modify and save the files in the tacx account it still overwrites.  Anyway worth checking just in case this is happening too

  • So my experiment to lower the threshold to zone 1 has been successful and I am seeing some minutes being added now.

I wasn't aware that there was a 10 minute trigger and I guess my recent activity has been more bursty and low intensity and thus has simply not registered.

Can you explain how the measurement works. Does it start accumulating after 10 minutes of activity starting at 10?

    Many thanks for your help.

  • You need 10 minutes but it counts those 10, so if you do 13 in a row you'll get 13 not 3.

  • so on my garmin connect  my intensity mintutes are based on "automatic" - would it be more accurate if i based it on heart rate zones and if so what zones would people recommend as i merely just go for walks, nothing else.  thanks
