Heart rate on VivoActive 3 vs VivoSmart

I just replaced my old Vivosmart 4 with a VivoActive 3 because I wanted a true smartwatch. So far, I love the new watch but one thing is bugging me. I used to be able to take a brisk 30-minute walk and get my heart rate into the moderate zone and keep it there for the duration. With my new watch, I can't get it over 100 even if I break into a jog. Sometimes after walking for 15 minutes at a 12:00 pace, my heart rate is barely above my resting HR of 60! I actually stopped this morning when it did that and took my pulse and it was over 110.

So my question is, is the HR monitor on this watch just not as accurate as the one on the VivoActive? Or is it possible there's an issue with this particular watch? (I've tried the usual stuff: cleaning the sensors, adjusting the watch on my arm, etc.)

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Wrist-based HR monitors depend on how the watch is placed on the wrist. The band and the watch part on the Vivosmart is very different than the Vivoactive so it's harder to find the sweet spot on the wrist for VA3. What I tend to do is tighten the watchband by 1 or even 2 links when I'm exercising. I find that helps a lot. Also, wear the watch a bit higher on the wrist so that it's not resting on the wrist bone.

I had to experiment a few days before I was able to get an HR result I believed was accurate.
