Is there a definitive guide to using Vivoactive 3 anywhere?

You know, what used to be called a user manual.  Everything had one in the days before self evident computing.

I'm really at the end of my tether with my Vivoactive 3.  Every time I want to do something, it turns out I can't or there isn't a guide for it.

On top of that, my phone has to be rebooted before I run, and the connection tested, or the run will be lost.  The watch and the phone drop connections on average 3 times a day.  Normally rebooting the app does it but sometimes you have to reboot the phone as well.  On really bad days you have to reboot the watch too, and end up resetting your step count.

I'm doing Garmin Coach at the moment, and today I wanted to continue running after the workout, and log it as a single event.  No such luck.  Save or discard.  Then record the next 10 minutes as a separate activity (which you cannot then merge).

So I googled if I could continue running, and learned that you can, but it's not obvious.  Press the pause button.  ???  'Where is the pause button on a Vivoactive 3?' I googled.  3 pages of auto pause and nothing on a pause button.

Then there was the time I couldn't do my training session because of an emergency.  Tried to move it to the next day but I couldn't because it was in the past.  Why?  So bloody obstructive.

Sorry if I'm moaning but Garmin have no clue what 'self evident' means, and are using it an excuse not to provide proper guides.  The app should be giving hints, not waiting till you get back and hope a forum participant will take pity on you.

It's one of the few watches that looks relatively elegant on the wrist of a small woman, and has the added bonus of not giving me eczema like my fitbit did.  I'm reluctant to part with it for it's looks and wearability but I am tired of it's flakiness and incomprehensibility.

Am I alone?  Have others found a better source of information?  Has anyone found a better product?

  • My journey has been as follows:  Pebble; then FitBit Charge; then VivoSport; now VivoActive 3.  I'm fairly technically inclined.  However, I have to agree that there's a significant lack of clear information on using .... actually, ALL of the FitBit and Garmin.

I've tracked a few strength workouts with the 2 Garmin devices.  It's a real pain, because the drop-down lists of exercises is lengthy, yet manages not to "suggest" those that you've just entered earlier in the course of the workout.  It's laughable, really.

I was hooked by being able to design workouts with multiple steps with the VivoActive watch.  But it's PAINFULLY unclear just how to create, load, and execute and track a custom workout.  I keep finding myself doing alternate canned workouts, because it doesn't seem as if the ones I design have ever made it to the device.  Yes, I have BOTH CONNECT and Garmin Express.  I've tried to use both to get a workout from the web app to the watch/phone.  I still don't know whether I did it and just can't find it, or whether I never managed to do it.

Garmin Pay seems as though it would be helpful during this pandemic time.  But it isn't letting me set things up either.  Maybe my smart phone tries to be too smart - I've seen fights between various password management functions before.  Anyway, OP, you are NOT alone.

The VVA3 manual online is okay.  It just is too too basic so far.

Yes I read it from time to time, when I try something new, but it doesn't cover half the issues I have, and doesn't always describe in sufficient detail.  The constant need to reboot everything is a pain too.  If I don't check it's connected to my phone before a run, I just know it will need rebooting and lose what I've done.

I'm willing to bet an Apple watch would be much easier to use, but the price, the poor battery life and the unattractive face have stopped me investigating

I had fitbit for years.  3 different models, and each one of them seemed to offer the best for my activities at the time.  The last one was the first smartwatch I owned, and although I don't swim often enough to warrant a watch capable of measuring swimming, I decided to take it into the water when I was on holiday, just to test it.  Sure enough, after 20 minutes it died. That's when I got the Garmin, which is also supposed to measure swimming.  I've decided not to try it though.

What all these products really need is in use prompts, and Garmin coach particularly could have more guidance on how to use the watch for each workout.  Another thing I'd pay extra for is voice guidance.  I'm not great with contact lenses and am buying them just so I can see my watch when running, so a couple of hundred £ on a watch would soon pay for itself

All a bit late. Sorry.  You have prob sorted this now but I thought I’d post.  Have you tried DCRainmaker?  He has put quite a lot of useage info in his reviews, plus if you paste in his forum he may get back to you.  Cheers.  J
