VA3 - mysterious 5th data field appeared temporarily

While hiking yesterday, a 5th (full screen) data field mysteriously appeared in my activity. The field had a large direction indicator and "distance to start" data. By the time i finished my hike it was gone. This watch only has the option to have 4 data fields. HOW / WHY??

  • Do you have CIQ DFs installed?  Some when in full screen mode can display more than 4 things.

I have 2 dfs downloaded, but neither is installed.

  • In cases, if a CIQ DF crashes it's replaced by the timer.  Are you sure you don't have one of the two configured for the data screens in the activity you're using?

I did not notice any data fields crash in the activity. The mysterious 5th field that appeared for quite some time, before disappearing, was not a timer. It indicated the direction to, and how far I was from, my start position, as the crow flies. I looked through the data fields available on the watch and I didn't see anything like it. Even if I had, I set up 3 fields per screen and this was one df taking up the entire screen. I toggled through my data screens many times on the hike and saw this multiple times. I wish I had taken a picture.

Mystery solved.  During an activity, if you press and hold on a data field, several options appear, most of which are unrelated to the df. Two of the options are  navigation and activity settings. Activity settings is where one goes thru to find data screen settings, among other things. This is where I've gone to set up all screens and dfs. Only 3 data screens plus heart rate can be adjusted. But, if one  chooses navigation instead,  then there is a "back to start option". Choosing this adds a new full screen df. So, that is where the field came from. Now i ask why? I dont normally lock my screen during an activity as then i cant toggle between screens. So, somehow it got added and then deleted during my activity.

    Thanks for your input!

  • I had no idea you could get to the navigation screen that way, but that could come in useful if someone was lost (or even if you couldn't remember exactly where you left your car).
