Use cellphone GPS during Activity

Hello Guys,

I recently bought the vivoactive 3 and I am a little bit confused as I was a Fitbit user before. So it's the first time I have a device that is GPS built-in.

Question is, can we deactivate GPS from the watch but still have the location - pace - speed - etc. for activities like walk / jogging / bicycle when your phone is paired and with you during the activities just like it was with my Fitbit?

Thanks :)

While we are here, can someone explain what is GPS + Galileo and the other one that I see in options? PrayHeart eyes

  • No, you can't depend on your phone for the GPS stats. It has to come from your watch if you want it included in Connect.

The Galileo GPS system increases the number of satellites used by the watch's GPS sensor.

GLONASS or "GLObal NAvigation Satellite System" is a Russian GPS satellite system.

The more satellites, the better the accuracy but it could take a bit longer to connect. That being said, I find my VA3 connects within seconds..

  • You can choose between GPS/GPS+GLONASS/GPS+GALILEO.

GPS is american navigation system, GLONASS is russian navigation system and GALILEO is navigation system for Europe.

But all of those navigation systems can be used everywhere.

Mostly i use GPS + GALILEO (I am from Europe), but i think it doesn't matter what you use. The differences will be very small .

You can use any combination of the satellite systems and it can matter.  I live in the Pacific Northwest.  In my region I have more and/or closer GLONASS satellites than I do Galileo.  GPS only works fine for me, but on very overcast days I'll use GLONASS in addition for better reception.  I rarely have more than 3 Galileo satellites in view and have found in my use case using Galileo does nothing for me.

  • Everytime you must combine GPS + what you want. And I said that it can matter, but there will be small differences. I think that for most people the small difference will not be a problem. Teoretical you are right, but in my opinion it Is not worth solving.
