Random restart and data loss

So again today I work out click finish and save and then I get the dreaded random restart.  Soon as it happens I notice my step count is back to what it was 2 hours earlier.  I have done hard resets.  Updated software.  This isn't  the first time this has happened.  I was initially happy with my purchase but over the course of 10 months I am really starting to hate my watch. I am always worried about resets and losing activities because it will reset without warning.

I definitely would not recommend a vivoactive3 music to anyone at this point.

  • I have seen other people mention third party watch faces but I dont have anything that wasn't delivered except music.  Only thing left I can think of is delete the music but that kind of defeats the purpose. I will continue using this watch but my next one won't be garmin.

I have had this issues several times now with a Vivoactive 4. I originally bought a 3 but had skin irritation and so they upgraded me to a 4 which was much appreciated. However, now I don’t get texts without the app being open like I did on my 3 and I’m having. This issue of the watch restarting itself when I try to end a workout. I’m a swimmer and it restarts when I try to end a swim workout. It is highly frustrating and I’m starting to extremely regret buying a Garmin even with the upgrade they gave me.

  • I feel your pain.  I too regret buying my VA3 Music.  It has served its purpose but I won't buy their cheaper models next time.  I have not heard anything bad about their higher end models from people I know so I may consider one of those.

I am still using my VA3 music and it has been working well now for the past 8 months other than the battery seems to drain faster and faster as more updates come out which is probably by design.  The one thing I did change was to stop actually listening to music off the watch which kind of defeats the purpose of the music version.  The bluetooth sucked as well which was another reason to connecting my headphones back to the phone.

The only thing I could suggest would be if you have the music version, with onboard storage, is to delete your song library.  Delete any custom watch faces you may have and run the watch as it is from the factory.  These things shouldn't have to be done but they have some serious deficiencies in their software. Other than that my other suggestion would be to find a table that isn't quite level and put it under one of the legs to level the table.  Maybe the watch can fulfill some other purpose.

  • Can anyone confirm that this works before I go ahead with this.

These random restarts are a pain in the ***.

  • Hi there! The device should not be rebooting. Can you remove any CIQ apps you have then sync with with Garmin Express on the computer. If you would like, you can keep me updated on if this were to reboot again. Just tag me!

  • No, can't confirm this at all. I am still running a stock watch and I still get random restarts now and then.  Most recently I was about 5 miles into a marathon and the live tracker wouldn't work and every other minute I would get a notice that livetracker failed to start.  Then out of the blue the watch just restarted on me.  Luckily after it restarted it did save my stats to that point and allowed me to resume the activity so I only lost about a tenth of a mile.  I need to look up the venu and see if this happens on that watch because I do like the garmin apps and all the data available to me I just hate this watch because of the random restarts and loss of some data.
