Which "activity" is actually most accurate (steps * stride) for indoor running and walking?

I have noticed very good accuracy on my Vivoactive 3 Music in GPS mode. I have run it in tandem with my Samsung phone and Runkeeper and the two are within a few hundredths of a mile. However, when I mall walk my steps are durn near dead on but my distances are not even close. First, I have my walking stride set via the Connect app at slightly over 30". Last night in "Indoor Walk" mode I walked 3 miles and logged 6300 steps. At a little over 30" per step for walking stride that is very, very close! However, in its typical fashion, my distance showed up as 0.77 miles total! Same kind of thing happens in "Treadmill" mode. Fairly accurate step count but a distance that is short by 50% or so. And, note, that when I am on the treadmill I place the watch in my pocket because I tend to stabilize with my hands. Has anyone found an activity mode that is flat out steps * stride for distance?

  • I am having the same issue.  I walked the mall for 40 minutes going at least 3 mph pace and logged .48 miles.  It should have been at least 2 miles!!!!!!!  Any suggestions on how to fix this.  I did try to do the stride length to no avail

  • If you had a bunch of starts and stops, that would explain it.  Garmin watches have smarts for step counting to reject things like just moving your arms.  You must do at least 10 steps at a time for any to count.

    1. I did not have a bunch of stats and stops. I walked continually for 40 minutes
  • It doesn’t count steps if you’re not moving your arms - such as pushing a cart (mower, snowblower, stroller); hand in your pocket; carrying something; etc

  • I go to the mall specifically to walk when inclement weather so i am only walking. I've only had this watch for two weeks so I'm trying to learn it. I had a fitbit previously and it was more accurate with the distance when unable to use gps. But i am really liking the garmin so dar but this is a little frustrating
