The steps made during a running workout are not included in the total daily steps on the watch (4s).
The garmin app shows the correct amount though.

Do you have another device, which is marked as your primary fitness tracker?
If you have f.e. a fitnessband which counts your daily steps and wear the VA3 just for workouts additionally, it would mix up your total amount of steps.
So it is only possible to have one device defined to record your steps.
This is my problem exactly. I use a forerunner 220 when I run and a Vivoactive for daily wear. Yesterday I ran 6 miles with the Forerunner, but my step count only accounts for the steps I took while wearing the Vivoactive. I wish I could manually add steps from my run into my daily count - or better yet I wish the watch would calculate that for me based on my average cadence and time elapsed while running.
True up is supposed to automatically count steps from multiple devices. I have a VA3 and a VF1. About once every 5 days, I use the VF1 to count steps for an hour while my VA3 is charging.
Trueup takes the highest number of steps from multiple devices in a variable time period so to ensure I don't lose steps, I sync both the VA3 and the VF1 at the the time I put on the VF1. I sync them again when I switch back to my VA3. It works flawlessly for me.
I suggest you sync both the FR220 and the VA3 before leaving for your run and then again when you return.
