Vivoactive 3 - Garmin Pay (NFC issue)

Former Member

Hi everyone,

I have an issue with my va3.

I tried to use Garmin Pay at the supermarket, and when I put my watch near the card reader, nothing happened and on my watch screen I saw my card with the message asking me to put the watch near a reader.

Furthermore, on my Android smartphone, I have some apps to read NFC tags, and when I try to read my watch, nothing happens too.

So I asking myself if it's a hardware issue (NFC chip default) ?

And does anyone of you already had the same issue ?

Thanks by advance,

Best regards

  • Garmin Pay only works when the vendor's credit card processor supports it.

There are some grocery stores near me that support Apple & Android pay, but not Garmin Pay.  Some support Apple pay only.

    Hi fallingrock,

    Thanks for your answer !

Oh ! I thought that every store that support Contactless payment (NFC), support automatically every kind of payment (Apple Pay, Android Pay, Garmin Pay, Fitbit Pay etc..) because it's an NFC transaction, I don't know if you see what I mean.

And that's what I read on other sites.

  • NFC is just the way your device is identified to the vendors payment terminal ... the credit card processor has to support the NFC provider.

    From https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-pay/ ...

"Almost anywhere you can make contactless payments. Keep an eye out for participating stores, and check the list of compatible banks and credit cards. More will be added over time."

    Oh I think I've understood !

    Thanks for your answer.

But concerning my va3 normally all my NFC apps on my smartphone should recognize my va3 everytime I put it on the back of the smartphone, when I'm on the wallet on the va3 ?

  • Depends on the NFC reader, I would guess.

My iPhone will only read certain kinds of NFC tags. It may be similar for Android.

  • Hi KC,

Android phone should recognize the watch when you activate the Garmin Pay. I had the same problem with my brand new VA. It got replaced after contact with the Garmin support.

    Hey !

I got my VA3 replace tomorrow.. a refurbished one !

But.. still the same problem :(

My phone detected the watch once and then now, can't detect it anymore !

edit : I tried on the smartphone of my girlfriend, it works like 4 times / 5 and then it worked on my phone.

    Completely random behavior..

  • I payed using VA3 (with Revoult card) in normal store - there was no problem.

Just - as you mentioned - tried also to read by NFC in my phone the NFC on VA3 when the card via Garmin Pay is activated (used app TagInfo) - no reaction form phones NFC chip.  So, this situation must be normal (you asked about it).
