V02 Max not updated after 5K personal record — why?

I did a 5K run earlier today in which my average heart rate was 83% of maximum heart rate, and the total activity time was 22:37. That should have updated the V02 Max, but it hasn't. I'm not certain but it looks like the V02 Max score has not updated after the by now notorious 6.60 firmware update on the Vivoactive 3. If useful, the activity itself is here

Has anyone else had their V02 Max update after 6.60 update?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

  • Hi,

the VO2Max is not that simple. Garmin has a little threshold, that it won´t be updated with more then a single number, even if you are doing a resting-run and a competition afterwards.

Also it seems that there are more variables, we don´t know.

But I made the same experience:
VO2Max was at 57 after several interval trainings.
Then did a competition (5.2k in 20:40min) lowered to 56.
Earning a segment (1.3km), the day after, with a 3:35 pace: Lowered to 55.

The VO2Max is a good thing to see how fit you are. But doing resting runs, change between interval training and long distances, it constantly changes. Because it only relays on your speed, heartrate, age and weight (also m/w).
If you have a slow run with a low hr, it will lower the VO2Max. You can raise it with a short speed run. Both on your same fitnesslevel. That´s how it works Rolling eyes

PS: To have something better, stop your activity after a run. Then wait and do not push the "Finish" button. After 1:30 minutes it will display the pulse which was lowered in that period of time. The fitter you are, the higher the number!
It also has the inconvenience, that it is a bit different after a slow run, but you´ll get a feeling for that!

Mine often does not update VO2 max after more or less the same run (5-8 km, pace 5:00 to 5:30, just to say I'm not walking). Some days it updates it, and other days it doesn't. It calculates VO2 max only about half of the time. Been doing this for awhile, even before 6.60 update. Just add this to the many quirks of the VA3...

  • I see at least 2 times an dropping heartrate but constant pace.

Did you pause the activity to recover your heartrate? maybe thats why it doesnt count for vo2max.

  • When analyzing the run afterward on Garmin Connect, I also noticed the dropping heart rate. I have no idea if that was what actually happened in reality, or it was a measurement error. One thing I am certain of is that I did a straight run without any pauses!

  • Hi, you and Former Member were both right. Today I did a leisurely 5km run, and sure enough, the V02 Max was updated — going down to 51 from 52. Ah well!
