running intervals skipping

Bought a VA3 music recently and tried out some interval runs. I set up the intervals by creating a workout on the app with a warmup, then 5x run followed by walk and then cooldown. For some reason when I use the VA3, the interval skips as seen in the aattached picture. The third run skips and goes to recover for 2 seconds but then then the following run is now 1 minute long as opposed to 2 like it is at the beginning. I then only have 4 runs instead of 5. I have the device set to lock during an activity so I don't think that the touchscreen has accidentally been double tapped to advance to next interval. This is now the second time this has happened and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

  • Nice to see there is now a "step type" Thumbsup

From my testing, the double-tap jumps over the whole repetition. Which means you would end up with the cool down, instantly.
As you wrote, this is no possibility during a locked watch.

What might be something: The "jump" happend more or less after the first kilometer (or mile). My running app is configured to create a lap on every kilometer. Also showing a screen with my last pace. Maybe something is wrong with that.

My intervals are mostly by distance. I´ve never  got a similar behaviour.

  • Is this a VA3 Music feature only?
I dont have "Step Type" filled. It is always empty (--). For all activities with a training in the past and also for all recordings with FW 6.60.

Connect Web shows the column, since several days. But nothing in it Disappointed

  • Same here.

I always use distance for interval training and never got the problem.

Oh I din't think about the lap counter.I think I also have it set up every km which is useful for longer runs but I don't know if that is the issue. I'll try and get rid of the lap counter and see if it makes a difference

I think step type is available for most garmin watches. Try making a custom workout either through the web portlet or through the android/ios app

No I haven't been able to fix it but I've tried to make workouts with fewer intervals so there's less chance of skipping since I tend to find it skips within the first 2 seconds usually. Also I don't know if it helps but I've found there to be fewer random skips when I make a workout that doesn't repeat. E.g. I want to do (run, walk) repeat x5 but I now make the workout on the app by putting run, walk, run, walk, run, walk .... etc manually. It's a lot more work and you can't see on the watch how many intervals you have left and it hasn't solved the issue but I've found it to be a lot less frequent. I hope that made sense?

  • I have the exact same problem with my Vivoactive 3 Music, it's really annoying. I emailed Garmin support about it last week, I hope they can fix it soon. Intervaltraining is a disaster now Disappointed

I have the same problem. Is there a solution yet?

  • A workaround for now is to not use the music feature of your watch. When you don't listen to music on your watch, fe Spotify, then the interval training works without any problems. Weird but true.

I emailed Garmin Support a few times about it, but there's still no real solution from Garmin.
