Tell Me Why There Is An "Elliptical App"

I am not trying to be difficult, but I really don't understand why Garmin has their built-in Elliptical app. From the postings here on numerous occasions, the moderator has stated that it doesn't track distance, and there are no plans to change this. Therefore, you really don't get any information under this app that you get by using the Cardio app. I don't understand why it doesn't track distance. Wearing my VA 3 with no other sensors, it tracks fairly accurately my number of "steps" when I'm on the Elliptical using the Elliptical app. Given this, a stride estimate could give you an estimate of distance. Without something like this, there really is no Elliptical app that does anything beyond recording the basic info in the Cardio app. To me, it seems to be misrepresenting the capabilities of the VA 3. I say this even though I find the VA 3 itself to be a competent device.
  • Because people have asked for it.
  • Sometimes it's just a matter of how the activity shows up in Garmin Connect. If they do sport A, they want to see it as sport A, even if sport B displays the same info.
  • Agreed with Jim. Most people (me included) don't like having to change the activity type afterwards in GCM. This way, everything works automatically.

It was nevere meant though, to have ellpitical-specific metrics. I gues this wouldn't work anyway. Even though you have a specific stride lenght, this won't translate to an elliptical, where the stride lenght is given by the mechanical parts. And I guess, no elliptical device has the very same stride lenght. Also, the distance given on any elliptical device is to be taken with a grain of salt (or better, an entire salt mine…).
