Touch sensitivity in shower

I used a Vivoactive HR for 2 years before switching to a Vivoactive 3 last month. Is there a different technology in the touch screen? With my previous watch, I never had an issue with phantom touches while in the shower, but the VA3 is always swiping through screens and sometimes selecting menu options just from the streams of water coming from the shower head.

I normally only take the watch off when it is charging, so this behavior seems unusual compared to what I'm used to.

poit57 I purchased the VA3 the day after it was released. It was my first touchscreen I owned, so I can't compare it to other devices. I had the same issue in the shower as you're having. It was one of the many reason I bailed on it after 3 months. My wife got her's around the same time and still has it. She says she doesn't have this problem. So.....
  • My vivoactive HR was the same in that the touch screen did not react to water in the shower. I got a Vivoactive 3 about 2 months ago and it goes crazy with water hitting it. It is a little bit of a pain but I just lock the screen before I get in the shower so it wont do that.
  • This is one of my biggest issues with this watch. Yes, you can lock the screen, but once you are in the shower with water on the screen, it is very difficult to lock since you need to use the screen to do so. The other option is to leave the screen locked most of the time, but then the big lock symbol in the middle of the screen stops you from viewing the time for normal use.

I have opt'd to not lock it (since i mostly forget to do it before going in the shower), and the result is I am continually having settings change that I have to then go and fix about once a week. Most common is to effect my favourite activities.

You have to lock the screen before the shower otherwise it will go nuts under the water.
  • The simple solution is just don't wear it in the shower. I charge mine everyday for the 15-20 minutes I have it off for showering, since that needs done sometime anyway
  • There is a simple solution for many problems of the VA3 but that does not make it the best solution. The VA3 is a perfect device if we just use simple workarounds for all its shortfalls. In my case I shower multiple times a day and taking the watch off is inconvenient. The best solution for me is to lock it before entering the shower, but I am in a rush to shower and get back to work after a gym workout most of the time and forget to do this. I would be happy to leave the device locked all the time, but the stupid lock symbol in the middle of the screen obscuring the time prevents me doing that. Just sorting the size/position of the lock notification would be enough to satisfy me.

A previous post suggested it would be good to have a partial lock mode where settings could be locked to prevent accidental setting corruption. That would be a great solution. It could easily be implemented.

Do any of the developers at Garmin actually wear these devices for daily use to improve the usability. I work at a company and we develop products with a user interface. We spend a lot of time getting users to use it in a normal usage environment to find usability issues. I don't think Garmin does this.

With some simple software changes, this device would be so much nicer to use on a daily basis.
  • Very irritating to see that this group started over 2 yrs ago and nothing has changed. Like what was mentioned below, I think the developers need to use the watches in every day life to understand additional items to consider e.g. touch sensitive. Battery lasts 1 day with 3 hrs of activity and I have tried to turn all additional functions off. The snooze option blanks the screen! Save battery and sensitivity by...turning your watch off?!

Well the challenge is still the same 2 yrs later and many comments covering the same irritating function with no changes made. Needless to say, making a comment is a bit of a waste of time.
