Manual laps for running?

I'm confused. I double-tapped the screen to end the first lap during my running. And it appeared to have done so, but then I tried to start a new lap by double-tapping and it didn't do anything. I tried long-touching the screen - nothing worked. The only thing I could do is end that activity, save it, and start a new activity, which obviously ruins my HR, and exercise time and now I have several separate workouts when it was ONE workout I tried to do. Is there something I'm just not seeing?
  • When you double-tap to end a lap it automatically starts a new lap. It sounds like you want to end a lap and take a rest before the next lap. I haven't used my VA3 for something like that so I don't know if it has a "Lap" option in the Pause menu like 645/Fenix line has.

To check for this option start a run and press the button to pause it. Then when it goes to the Resume/Save... menu scroll down to see if there is a Lap option. If there is, when you select that it will end the previous lap at the time you paused the run but will remain paused until you hit the physical button again to resume the run and it will start with the new lap you created while paused.
  • I haven't tried what R_Tellis said, but what I have done is double tap after the work period, then double tap again when I have finished the rest period. You will see the lap times and rest period times when you look in your Garmin Connect under "splits", and can get the av and max HR for each lap there too (scroll across the lap data). However if the rest period is less than the time it takes for the "lap" info to disappear on the watch face, you won't be able to use the VA3Music as your rest interval-measuring device! I do find that the double tap is finicky and isn't as reliable as pushing a button. It might take 2 or 3 tries of double-tapping to get it to register, which defeats the purpose of timing laps accurately. It is also awkward to do when you are doing sprint repeats and you're knackered! EDIT - If you set the profile for the activity to have "lap time" you can use that for both timing and the rest period, but it's still annoying when the double tap doesn't work!
  • And btw, don't rely on the wrist-based measurement for HR when doing running intervals - it is very slow to respond to HR changes. Use a HR chest strap
