Why can't these newer watches display daily miles?

I switched from a Vivosport to the Vivoactive 3. I noticed the daily miles was missing, however it was not a big deal to me. Now I got my wife the same watch, and she wants to return it because it doesn't show her the miles accumulated during the day. It's basically got to be a simple calculation based on stride length, I'm not sure why it has been left off of most of the newer watches?

I installed a widget for her that has miles, but it's small and hard to read. The few watch faces that display miles also don't have a second hand, and she uses a second hand a lot during the day.

How hard is it to program a watch face I'll try to do it myself if Garmin can't keep a simple function like miles available...
