Walking indoor

Hello all! I have started excercise also indoors on walking treadmill, but I have a problem how to track this activity. I have tried Walking indoor, running indoor, BF indoor, I've tried to make a new excercise... Everytime the app tracks time, heart rate, GPS is off, but after an hour it does not take number of steps * step length, but weired 0.2km walked distance (which seems to be taken from not properly turned off GPS)... When then information is taken to third party app (for example strava or runtastic), there is no possibility to change the walked distance (and pace calculated from it) and I can'treally track my progress. How should I set the app properties or which app is recommend for indoor walking showing the correct walked distance?
Thank you!
  • When using something like a treadmill, don't hold on to the bars. The watch needs to "see" the steps and holding on will impact that. It's the same with things like a shopping cart, stroller, etc.

You might try putting the watch in a pocket, and a footpad may help things.

That is not the problem. I am not holding with hand where watch is. It calculate the steps properly (cca 5000) but at the end walked distance is shown as 0,1-0,2km.
  • I think the indoor distance detection method requires you to be running, as it is not a simple product of steps and step length. Walking might not do.

I understand the difference between indoor and outdoor activity that by indoor is GPS off, because it makes no sence. But at the end to activity overview is the information from GPS anyway (otherwise it should be 0 or --). The same result comes with indoor walk and indoor run app. :(
  • You erroneously assume, that your indoor distance comes from GPS, which should be off, but for some reason isn't. The thing is that your watch has an indoor distance detection algorithm that is based on arm swings, and not GPS. This is why you see distance accumulating indoor. And the distance is wrong, because the distance detection algorithm works relatively well for running, but might give strange results for anything else, walking included.

I tried indoor running (GPS off) and it works. The distance is not properly the same as is showed on running belt but is acceptable (- 0.2km).
next time I will try indoor walking.
  • There are really a serious issue with the indoor activity on VA3. I really do not understand how it can be possible. I have yet writting a post about this but nobody until now has reaction about that.

I walk every day outdoor the same route. Usually I use the "indoor walk" just to not drain GPS power because I know the route and the real distance. Just one day by Week I use the "Outdoor walk" for the same route just to use sometime the GPS.

Distance is every time 1.26km and almost same steps count.

Just to see a screen of a recent walk OUTDOOR with the indoor activity ( and not with a caddie or a lawnmower)

You can see 1851 steps (and real steps around the garden with normal walk) and the VA3 show 20 meters with the real walked distance of 1.26Kms. I use automatic steps length and tried also the manual with a 0.685m by step. So it just to do steps x step length, not difficult ;)

It is just after a VA3 reset. Reseted just to see if I can correct the issue.

Day after I walked also the same route and the VA3 has better result for the beginning of the walk, it displayed right until 700m and just after, VA3 stopped to compute the distance and ending from 700m to 1260 meters without change the displaying distance. Ending the walk with 700m. I walked often (at least one time at week with the same route with GPS, so VA3 can compute the real GPS distance to adjust the steps length). I have also the Vivomove HR without GPS and each walk have the right distance. Same with my Fenix 3 or my Vivoactive 1 on indoor walk. So just a BIG BIG BIG.... bug on the VA3. I hope every time that the new firmware can resolve this but nothing happen.

Another thing. I used just to see the same "Walk indoor" in my house and after a 500 steps the distance displayed are 1500 meters ?????????????? what the joke ?????????

it looks that garmin doesn't care so much about vivoactive 3 :(
  • myrecku,

I suggest calling (not writing) tech support. Perhaps they can change your mind.
  • After I do a treadmill walk there's always a slight difference, after you hit button to stop tracking swipe finger up hit calibration and put in what the treadmill says then hit check mark. It then shows up on app your daily efforts on treadmill. I own a venu so it may be different. Mine over estimate s mine. I realize this is two year old post but AI thought incase others have issues that leads them to this. Hope you've got it working by now.
