Right wrist left wrist

In the user settings I can set the watch to left wrist or right wrist. I tend to switch the watch from one wrist to another though it's generally on the right during activities.
Why does the watch care which wrist it's on? Will any algorithms behave badly if I don't get the wrist correct in settings?
  • I swap mine around. I generally wear it on my left wrist during the day, right wrist at night ( just to give my skin a break from the band ) and sometimes forget to swap it in the morning and run with it on my right.

I've not noticed any problems with my data
  • I find I get 15% more steps from my right wrist than my left.
    I must walk funny.
My watch is set to the left wrist.

On some devices, buttons are reversed depending on the wrist you choose.
  • I would assume that anything related to motion tracking will benefit from knowing which wrist the watch is on. For example gestures or running cadence measurement.
  • I believe it is primarily connected with turning the backlight on when you raise your wrist to look at it. When you switch arms the motion is reversed and may not activate your backlight properly.
