GPS Fix Problem

Does anyone else have GPS Fix problems?

For my last three runs it took the watch between 5 and 10 min to get a GPS fix.
Which is kind of annoying because i can either wait in the cold for a GPS Signal or start my run and lose my first km or so.
  • Do a search for EPO.bin. Possible that your device's EPO.bin file is not current, if it has one. If you have not done so, force a synch with either Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile and see if that makes a difference. Al alternative is to leave your device out in the open and looking for satellites (select an activity that requires GPS) for about 20 mins or so to allow for the satellite data to be updated.
  • For the F5+ there has lately been a problem that the EPO file from Garmin Express doesn't work. So it has to be manually deleted in the watch and afterwards synchronized from Garmin Connect Mobile.

I don't know if this problem also hit the VA3, but it might be worth trying the instructions here:

  • I don't think it's as cut and dried as that. Over in the 935 forum someone has said they updated via GCM but not GE. Someone else said GCM worked but GE didn't. For me, GE worked but GCM did not. Try both and see what works.

I had the same problem. Check in the settings: go to run, but don't initiate the activity, settings, GPS, and check that GPS + GLONASS (those Russian conspirers LOL) is enabled.

*update* This morning I went for a run, with GPS + GLONASS enabled. After more than 5 minutes (under the rain standing still like an idiot) the stupid watch still hadn't locked enough satelites to enable GPS, so I started running anyway. After another about 5 mins GPS startet working - AWFULLY - and a 15km+ run resulted in 12km. Anyway now an update to Garmin Express has been released (6.8.1.0) and, after synching the watch with the latest version, GPS fix took just a handful of seconds inside my house, close to the open window. So it looks like the fix is with Garmin Express now properly synching satellite data?

Yes, from what I saw the the fenix 5/fenix 5+ forums, the fix to GE seems to have resolved the issue with the EPO file not properly updating, so make sure you have the latest Garmin Express.

Incredible difference after syncing from the new version of GE. 5 minutes is reduced to 5 seconds to get a good GPS fix.

I did some tests and I am pretty sure that Garmin Connect Mobile (Android) does not put the epo.bin file on the watch: only Garmin Express with the watch connected to a PC seems to do it. If this is confirmed, I would find it pretty dumb: people travel with their phones only and they can't do a satellite lock in a decent amount of time without this updated file. Also, the file is just like 34KBytes, so transferring it from the phone via Bluetooth would be just a fraction of a second...
  • To get the latest EPO file with GE, make sure you've updated GE to version 6.8.1.0 or later.

Thanks! But I was complaining about Garmin Connect Mobile. Garmin Express works now.
