Is there an open water swimming hack?

For long indoor swims, I like the ability to have the swimming app buzz me every 10 minutes so I can mentally clock how many laps I've swum. I'm going to do an outdoor swim this weekend. I know that there isn't an outdoor swim app, but is there a way to get the every X minute buzz to work to pace myself? Should I just do the indoor swim app and realize that all the data it collects are garbage? Any other ideas?

Thanks!
Pat
  • There is a pretty good outdoor swimming app on the IQ Store called Swimming App Professional. It's still in beta and there are some bugs (the most irritating being that it measures distance accurately but when Garmin Connect gets hold of the .fit file it messes with the measurement to make it waaay too long. However, it has nice configuration options and is button only so no hassles with the VA3 screen.

You can set distance or time alerts with the basic swim function.  Start by activating the swim app and tapping to remove the disabled heart rate message.  Now chose alerts and set a number of lengths or time alert.  You can also modify the swim screen: I found that I could only really see 3 pieces of data while flipping at the end of the pool.  I chose distance, elapsed time and time of day
