HR way off during workout

I'm on the rower today and set the watch to indoor rowing. Some idiot forgot to press start at the beginning of the workout, so he pressed start 5 minutes into the workout. When I was done, I looked at the watch and it said between 77-103 bpm. I put a stopwatch on my phone and checked my pulse with my finger...23 beats in 10s works out to 138bpm. What's going on?

Does anyone know if the VA3 works with the Soft Strap Premium Heart Rate Monitor from Garmin?
  • I bought one for my Vivoactive 3 because I could never get a good consistent HR while doing cardio. It works great. I would highly recommend it

I second the above post. I've had a few Garmin's with oHRM's and they've all been inconsistent. Even using it for walking was hit or miss. I use a strap for all my workouts and the oHRM for everyday use and sleeping.

good to know. how do you connect the two? or do they automatically see each other?

When you get a compatible HR strap, you pair it with the watch like you would your phone. You do this once and every time you're wearing it and start an activity, it will automatically connect to the strap and turn off the oHRM.
  • I too have stopped using the optical HR monitor on the watch for running finding it too inconsistent. I can confirm that the VA3 works well with the Garmin Premium Soft Strap and would recommend using a belt for all CV work. I've even swapped the Garmin HR monitor on to a Polar soft strap belt and that works too, a tip that came from DC Rainmaker.
  • For me the same. HR sensor during hard activity shows 90bpm - really is about 130-140. Seems to be biggest bug ever, because of completely useless of vivoactive 3. (without strap HR)
  • For me the HR seems accurate while running , I get (within 1 beat) on average the same number as the Bragi Dash (which measure in-ear). I ordered the H10 from Polar and will check my first run without connecting the VA3 and the H10...
