Safe to charge at 2.4 amp?

Curious if it's safe to charge the Vivoactive 3 using a different adapter with output of 2.4 amp? Does the watch have to be charged by a USB port on a computer? I like this watch - I'd hate to fry it.
  • It doesn't have to be a computer USB port. I use regularly a 2 amp charger and the watch is fine so far.
  • Using a 2,4amp charger doesn’t mean that any device connected to it charges at 2,4amps - it only means that the charger is able to deliver 2,4 amps. The connected device only pulls whatever it’s designed for.

    It’s actually worse to charge a «big device» on a «small charger» than the other way around.
  • No, trickle charging is always safer for any li-ion battery than charging by a higher current. And it’s easy to test if the VA3’s battery can draw at 2.4 amps - just check the time it requires to complete the charge compared to 0.5A USB port. If it charges faster, this means this is not good for the battery in the long term. At least try not to charge it over 80% in this case.
  • Yes, slow charging might extend the long term battery life, however the OP asked whether it’s safe to use a 2,4amp charger and the answer to that is yes, it’s safe.

It’s not like the watch is going to catch fire or anything.

the watch is designed to be charged by a powerbank, so u can still use it outdoors if the battery is running low...of cos then u wouldnt be able to wear it on the wrist...but if ur on a bike etc...why not.

also at 2.4a - this is with my huawei charger, also tried with my LG charger which is at 1.8a - the watch actually charges SLOWER than if plugged into the USB...
this is cos when plugged into USB the watch basically goes into some standby mode.

when into a powerbank or external source, the watch is still running...and no u cannot turn it off to charge as the watch will just turn itself back on.
so basically the watch has some sort of regulating so it will not fry its circuits from any kind of fast charging.
  • I didn't notice the watch going into standby while charging from USB. I does go into file transfer mode and shows big charge percentage reading on the screen, but reverts back to normal operation once I "eject" it in the PC, while also continuing the charge process.

Great to know it tapers off the charge rate once the more powerful charger is used, thanks!

well, that big charge percentage is a standby...as u cant do anything with the watch during that time anyway since it exits normal operation.
  • I think it's more likely just a USB file transfer mode - the watch locks itself up for the process. It's not a standby 'cos the watch functions as usual, e.g. I can sync it with GCM just fine in the course of the charging while locked up. So it won't power down BLE, obviously.
