Activity not recorded after scheduled end of garmin coach workout

I’m following the McMillan training plan and ran a steady state easy run this morning. The scheduled workout was structured as follows: warm-up 10 min, run 10 minutes, optional run 5 minutes, cool down 10 minutes.

Since I was on a trail, I ddecided to run longer than the scheduled 35 minutes.

My watch paused at the end of the 35 minute scheduled workout, so I just unpaused it and continued running. I ran a little longer and ended the run as usual.

After syncing and viewing the activity, I noticed that all GPS data after the time when the watch auto-paused is missing from my run. Any idea how that could happen?

  • I just looked closer at the activity. My watch did record everything except for the GPS track during the time after the auto-pause.

Does the watch drop GPS during pause and then pick it up again after the activity is resumed? I was under tree cover during the period when the watch was paused, so maybe this is the cause - it was unable to pick up satellites again??
  • Yes, GPS recording stops. As in workouts, the end of the workout would be the same as pressing "stop" on your device. The activity ends, and you have the option to either resume (continue tracking and adding to the activity), save (save as is), or discard (delete the activity).
  • Thanks for the input. I did the former option and continued adding to the activity by pressing the button after it auto-stopped.

What should I do differently to not lose that GPS data after that?
  • Well, if you didn't keep the activity paused and did "resume," then I don't know why you wouldn't keep tracking GPS data. Might want to do a short 1-minute test just to make sure you're pressing the correct sequence of buttons.
  • I am supposed to do a Garmin Coach steady state run later today. For science purposes only.......I will try to finish it up, and then resume and run a little bit more. I'll check if my GPS stops at the end of the workout.

Did it work or did it not record GPS track?
  • Same problem happened again today. I ran a workout on a trail and approx 4 miles in the workout ended and auto-paused. I wanted to keep running so I unpaused the watch and continued running. I didn't stop for any extended period of time.

Checking the tracking after the run, I can see no GPS tracking was recorded after the autopause. The watch calculated the remaining distance from my steps in lieu of GPS.

I tried finding other written accounts of this problem and did find that some Fenix3 owners describe a very similar problem following the release of firmware 3.6.

I didn't do it....I just didn't have it to keep on going. I have another steady state run schedule for this Saturday...I'll give it another go.
  • Yes it does stop after work-out. I tried it, it's really annoying. I want it to just keep going after a Garmin Coach workout

I've had the same issue this morning, my activity on Garmin coach was completed and autopaused, it was only when it activated auto save that I was notified via a vibrate, at that point I resumed the activity but of course lost tracking in the meantime... is there a means of switching off the auto stop (not auto pause) as it seems this is a recurring issue for other runners...
