Open water swim

I know my vivoactive 3 doesn't do open water swims, but what is the go to choice "cardio" "other" when I am going to swim. I guess all I can really ask for is that the screen is locked so it doesn't jump around with the water touching it, and it gives me an overall time.
  • I've used "walk" (I only chose this bc approx. slow speed) with my VA, VA3 and Tomtom multisport (also without native OW swim).
I've had mixed results, mostly not so good. But you can change name of activity so you know it was ow swim and distance if it appears gps was way off.

You can set "lock screen" for activity to avoid water causing false swipes.

The app Any Activity allows the creation of an Open Water Swim app - bad news is that 5.20 introduced a bug for the app where, when started, the screen does not respond to input. Otherwise the app works better than any other for tracking open water swimming with GPS and HR (and please to the oHRM critics - please don't jump all over this - lol).

You can also use the 'Swimming App Professional' for Open Water. But same thing as mention above, disabling touch screen makes it difficult to stop and save activity.
  • I use Rowing to get strokes data, and then rename the activity afterwards.

Interesting. I guess "indoor rowing" would shut off GPS too.
  • Indoor rowing will, but Rowing will not. I use Rowing for on the water rowing usually, it works extremely well both for rowing and kayaking. And it provides strokes data for swims as well, keeping the HRM on in the process. The HR measurement under water is out of whack though.
  • I have the swimming app, but the gps data is (as can be expected) poor. It would be a nice solution if would only take gps locations on points were you hit the button, and calculate the track in between. To me this seems to be a simple software solution to a hardware limitation.

Okay, I'm going to use "Outdoor Rowing" this Thursday in an open water swim.. We'll see what happens.

Except hitting the button while in water is not a very good idea, the waterproof capability of the watch is compromised exactly this way. Lots of people complain they've bricked their watches in water, I suspect most of them did press buttons while fully or partially submerged.
  • Hmmm, I imagine this is bad in pool swimming too. I've been at the pool a lot lately....pushing the button. Usually it is up out of the water, but I think there have been a few where I had it submerged. I'll have to be more aware of this now.
