Garmin ‘Coach’ training plans

On their YouTube channel Garmin announced ‘Garmin Coach’ - their entrant into the guided training plans arena. I’ve used similar things on another app, Endomondo, which seemed ok. The Garmin version offers a free 5K training plan, from one of three available coaches (you pick the one you want). I poked around in Garmin Connect and the Coach stuff is there now. Some sample screen shots are attached. (I could only attach 3 from my device evidently). ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1373750.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1373751.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1373752.png

Nice feature, but I hope there will be plans for more experienced runners.
  • That looks pretty good, I hope they will bring more training plans
I will give a go to the 5K to increase my pace.
    Well done Garmin.
Training plan for other activities would be great...

I'm sure there will be, and those more advanced plans will cost $$ - of that I have no doubt. EIther paid to Garmin or to the specific coach in question. We'll see!
  • I selected the McMillan running plan and set a 5k goal of 27:00 (8:41 min/mi pace). My first scheduled workout is a benchmark run structured as: warm up 2:00, run 5:00, cool down 2:00.

The only guidance given for the running portion is: "Run strong. Walk if you need to."

The accompanying video gives a bit more detail, saying to run "at a comfortable pace for as long as you can".

Any guesses what exactly this plan is calling for here? Do they just want to establish an easy running pace to build the plan around?

Hey, I just did almost the exact same thing, except I picked 27:30....(I think I'll change it to 27:00) I just did the benchmark. It isnt' so straightforward what they are asking of us being 'coached'

Let's keep up the reporting here, and make sure we can highlight kinks and rough edges on this new thing.

BTW: Day 1 was tough out five minutes, Day 2 is run :30 mins..
  • So I ran the Day 2, 30 minute easy run this morning. I had turned off my autolap function for a hill repeat run I did yesterday, as I wanted only manual laps at the bottom and top of the hill.

I realized during my scheduled easy run this morning that my autolap was still off and tried to create a manual lap. When doing so, it advanced me to the optional extended run portion of the workout.

Does this mean that manual laps are not possible during workouts with optional extended run if you do not want to advance to the extended run?
  • Also, does anyone yet know how the plan will respond if you choose to reschedule a workout?

My biggest complaint about the plan so far is the inability to choose a 5k goal faster than 25 minutes.
  • Manual laps advance the workout step - that has always been the case.
  • Here is their Day 2 "EASY RUN" It is four segments. I've never used much or gotten the hand of workouts.
So example #1, like mTag I want to complete the optional part. Should I expect the Vivoactive 3 to
vibrate when I start...vibrate and change laps after 5:00 mins, vibrate and change laps after :20 mins, vibrate and change laps after the :10 min optional run, vibrate and signal the end of the workout after :05 min cool down.

So I would only push the key at the start and again and the finish, everything else will be vibrating and autolaps. Correct?

Now what interventions do I do if i choose NOT to run the additional :10 minutes? Edit it in advance, or doing during the workout?

    ------------------

    July 12, 2018 - 40 minutes

    Run at an easy pace.

    Warm up - 05:00 min:sec
    Walk or jog lightly.

    Run - 20:00 min:sec
    Easy pace.

    Run - 10:00 min:sec
    Optional Run
Lap if you want to end early or keep going if you're feeling good.

    Cool down - 05:00 min:sec
    Walk or jog lightly.

I guessed correctly. (probably as most of you know) the workout just ticked along. I didn't need to press the key or double-tap the screen, it vibrated and signaled the next step.

I'm assuming if I did not want to do the optional :10 minutes of running that were part of the workout, I would have double tapped and it would have skipped it and gone straight for the cooldown.

A question, at the end of it it buzzed, and I reached down and hit the key to stop it. Why does the workout add a last little 2 second lap from the time the workout cooldown is over until a press the key....Why doesn't it cleanly end at the end of the cooldown?
