VO2 Max and cycling

Step by step learning what and how to do to extract the most benefits out from VA3.

When I heard initially for the app "cycling app professional" I install it, but learning quickly that I cannot use the screens until riding anyway so I stop using it, not uninstalled only residing there.
Then installed the "JMG-DTF Cycling VO2 Max" also the JMG-DTF Running VO2 Max" datafields;
And, currently using in example for cycling the garmin default cycling app, also the default walking app.

In the watch I linked the datafield to the first screen of the walking/running app also to cycling app and after some couple minutes the VO2 Max start building up, in both apps walking and cycling...
When I sync the VA3 with my garmin connect in my S9 phone, I got the data extracted to Activities\Cycling, and there shows by activity date some nice layouts for speed-HR-cadence-elevation-and the VO2 (with a blue IQ beside it), also the HR zones.

So the VO2 Max is there, it is extracted, how accurate is I don't care at this moment but just to have it.
But, now going to Health Performance\ and there is a tab with a round graph for VO2 Max, my walking/running VO2 is showing 39 in example (because I can not run do to some injuries, for now, but assuming from my walking 27-29 and cycling 46-49 somehow averaging some numbers) but the cycling VO2 is empty saying "no data is available".

I believe this could be some disconnect inside the garmin connect, because depend what portion of the app I am accesing the VO2 is showing only from one source... from walking/running?

Tell me what I am doing wrong (beside if I am asking just too much from GC)?
  • Wow, you are throwing a lot of things together!

The cycling VO2max will only be calculated, if data is available like watts and cadence. They can only be measured by a pedal sensor. If this will be compatible with VA3, I don´t know (it seems not).
What you did with the custom field, is to display a value, someone developed beside garmin.
You can add any data with every name you want. So for example I can develop a custom app or datafield and add a field called "HerrRiebmann" and submit the value "is cool" ;)
Off course garmin will not put that data into my personal account info or raise my personal VO2max to "is cool" :D

What you want to archive is not possible.
  • Thanks Herr
So I don't worry about it until next :)
  • The Firstbeat analytics that Garmin uses requires power meter (watts) and HR data to calculate a cycling Vo2Max value natively. Since the VA3 doesn’t support power meters you’re never going to see it in Connect Mobile. As said above, the data field you’re using will generate a Vo2Max value but your activity files are the only place you’ll see it.
  • I had an impression this could be calculated combining output from sensors a: (gps speed) + b: (cadence) + c: (altimeter) + d: (HR), but yes this would be a way bigger effort for a processing unit also battery.
Other question is then, the VA3 got an extra tab in garmin connect (only as a default) that actually is a extra feature for this unit and won't be in practical use?
  • Do you need to cycle outside to get the Cycling VO2 Max reading or can you do it i side using a power meter sensor? Thank s in advance
