The VA3 isn’t designed to be a multi-sport device. There might be a CIQ app that will handle the task, but other than that you’ll have to start and stop each event in the race as a separate activity and start and stop them individually.
With CIQ tri apps (there are a few), it seems most record a tri as three separate activities on the non-tri devices (the va3 doesn't support multi-sport activities), and on top of that, the va3 doesn't support open water swim. The lowest end tri watch is the fr735xt.
