Use "Trail Run" activity profile for hiking?

Has anyone used the "Trail Run" activity profile for hiking on their VA3? And how do you change the activity name?

I hike 2 times a week, with roughly 10-15 miles distance and 4,000 ft of elevation gain. I'll be getting the Fenix 5X at some point, but this is in the meantime. Previously I was using my 920XT, which maybe I'll have to continue using for hiking if the VA3 cannot accommodate hiking. Also, I tend to be gone 8-12 hours (one time 17 hours with my group).. can the VA3 battery life last?

There are a few hiking apps in the IQ store. I personally think Hiking 2 is the best. 8-12 hrs is going to be pushing the battery limit.
  • I'm a bit partial to Hike2 (note my avatar - I wrote it :) ). You can record as a hike, or a walk, and there are many different screens including a breadcrumb trail, compass, sunrise/set data, and about any stat you want to see (even floors). You can also mark waypoints and see the direction and distance to each one to find your way back, as well as the direction and distance to start.

As far as battery, you can use "charge on the go". In settings, change the USB mode to "Garmin", and when you stop for a break, pause the recording, and hook up a battery based charger to the watch to top off the battery. I got over 20hrs that way on the original va.

My bad Jim. I meant your app Hike 2.
  • How do you get a TrailRun Activity to your VA3? I can't find that profile on mine
  • I don't think there is a native Trail Run activity on the va3. You might be able to find one in the CIQ store through.

Heres where/how I found the Trail Run activity... I went to add an activity., selected "create" then "copy activity", "run" and "Trail Run" is a name option. Is that just a name?
  • Ah ok. that makes sense. I think it is just the name and the profile is still "running" but you can adjust the settings for trail.

Would be interesting if there is a significant difference in the Trail running profile when it comes with the watch directly.
  • NomekSan, what do you mean by “but you can adjust the settings for trail”?

I took my 920XT and Vivoactive 3 on a hike this weekend. I used my "hike" activity on my 920XT and created a "trail run" activity for my VA3. Afterwards, I went in to Garmin Connect and changed the VA3 activity from "run" to "hike" and it turned out the exact same as my 920XT (I figured it would). So honestly, for anyone who doesn't want to take the extra time or effort to download or add apps to their VA3, the "trail run" activity works just fine for me. And I was able to fit all the info I really wanted on my data screens.
