Will I get vo2 max with ant+ heart rate monitor?

hi guys!

Had my Vivoactive 3 for a little over a week and been loving it so far, any issues I’ve had I’ve been able to work out with a look through these forums so I’m hoping you can help with this.

I have been been for a few runs and love seeing my vo2 max estimate change every run, I’ve recently bought the Garmin premium soft strap heart rate monitor for strength training, and I’m wondering if I’d get a vo2 estimate using that for running, or if I should stick with the OHR? I’d hate to lose the estimate but feel that for working out the chest strap is much more accurate, giving me a better picture of my health! ????

also, if anybody wants to add me on connect, my username is calummeridian ????
  • Yes, for activities that gives VO2max estimates you will get it regardless if you are using internal or external HR sensor. I agree that using a chest strap would give you more reliable HR monitoring, which then again gives you a more reliable VO2max estimate.

Thank you! I was hoping that would be the case, couldn’t imagine it not being but I read somewhere Bluetooth monitors wouldn’t give a vo2 max, is that right? It doesn’t matter for me because mines ant+ ????

  • I'm not sure about the bluetooth sensors, however I think it sounds strange if it won't give vo2max as long as it's providing a HR signal.
Nevertheless; I use the same sensor as you have (the basic Garmin ant+) and I can confirm that I get vo2max estimates when using it.

I think it was something to do with the protocols required for Ant+ that mean it HAS to provide something required for vo2 max, but Bluetooth doesn’t have too. I’m pretty sure it was on DC rainmakers, but I could be wrong.

Just tested it out with a little 5k run, vo2 max acquired... I wish I didn’t already know it was more accurate as it’s gone down by 1 (47ml) since my last run haha!
  • I think you might be confusing Vo2 for LTHR. Lactate Threshold readings require HRV and R-R data which all BT sensors might not give. But in this case since the VA3 doesn't have LTHR it's a moot point.
  • Can you tell me please what apps shall I load into VA3 to get the VO2 working?
Do to a lower back injury I am only walking for now and just started gravel biking again, but hoping soon to start jogging again.

"Walk" (brisk pace) or outdoor "run" apps for at least 15 minutes.

I also need help. I have a garmi HRM dual and a 235 and my vo2max hasn't changed. I'm also seeing improvements in my runs. I cannot confirm that my vo2 max changes when I use a chest strap. Rip
