Music controls dont show any information

I just picked up a vivoactive 3 and the music controls widget doesn't seem to show anything. If I start music playing on the phone (have tried with both google play music and poweramp), all of the controls on the widget work and can control the music. However, nothing in the widget changes to show any information. For example, the song name doesnt show up, no progress through the track, the play button doesnt change to a pause button (or vice versa), going into settings with ... doesnt show the current volume even though it can be controlled, and the permanently muted icon is shown

How do I fix this problem?

I'm using a Nexus 5x on Android 8.1, and garmin software version 3.5

i've had no issues using google play or the default music player on my huawei.
the widget for sure is slow at showing the new track info, but everything else works even the volume.

i can only think of re-adding the widget.
