Why do Garmin say not to charge their watches with portable power packs?

Does anybody know the specifics as to why Garmin say no to using portable power packs to charge their watches?

They say they haven't tested them for their watches but I'm sure they haven't tested all the lap tops we are recommended to use either.

I have a 5v= 2.0A max power bank I would like to/ need to use.

Ps apparently Suunto says power packs are fine for their watches. Should I just buy a suunto instead ;)

pps has anybody uses power packs regularly on their Garmin watch? Is so did it destroy it?

cheers
  • I do it all the time for my VA with absolutely no ill effects. However, I do make sure to unplug the watch as soon as it's 100% charged. Not every portable charger is built equally and with different specs I can see how it might be a risk if you use the wrong one.

Thanks pshare. What are the specs of the portable charger you currently use?

My charger is a Cygnett with the following specs:

SKU: CY1777PBCHE

Battery Capacity: Lithium-ion Battery 6,000mAh

Input: DC 5V 2.0A (MAX)

Output 1: DC 5V 2.0A (MAX)

Output 2: DC 5V 2.0A (MAX)

Total Output: DC 5V 2.0A (MAX)

Im happy to buy another if this one doesn't suit.
  • Mine is a Nextav d100.
    Battery:
    Capacity: 3000mAh.
    Charging current: supports 500mA, 800mA and 1.5A

To be honest, I didn't really pay attention to the specs. Maybe I should have. I just use it

In fact, the Nextav is more than a portable charger. It's primarily a wifi portable drive so it has more electronics built-in than a simple charger.

I just purchased this power bank

    http://www.belkin.com/au/p/P-F7U019/

looks like it has fancy stuff to protect the attached devices.
  • I have a Belkin UPS and a number of other products. Personally, I would not be concerned.
  • Some portable power packs shut down when only a small amount of current is being drawn from them. (For example, I've seen this happen when powering an Arduino.) Garmin watches charge at low power, so it's likely that some power packs will power down before charging completes. I can imagine that leading Garmin to simply recommend using a plug-in charger.
